The stock exhaust manifold has an attachments for a small tube that supplies warm air for the automatic choke on my '72 302. If I go to headers how do I provide this heated air to the choke?
Sedric, if you think you need it, the header company can sell you some tubing to bring heat up to the choke. A better way to deal with it would be to get a manual choke. DF
Mr. Gasket sells a little kit with a small metal "heat stove" tubing, and a hose clamp to attach it to the header. I got mine from JEGS (if you want I'll find the part number), but I think I saw the same thing at Advance Auto Parts. It was very easy to install, though the kit from Advance had instructions (kit from JEGS did not).
I am still looking for a heat stove to supply the warm air inlet for the air cleaner housing. I couldn't adapt the old one to fit over the headers. I made an attempt to create one from a piece of 2.5" exhaust pipe but I don't think it will work too well. Any ideas?
Sedric,
Glad to see your getting ready for the headers! You should be able to mechanically fasten that heat tube to the header just about anyway you want to and it will still work. Let me know if it really works, after the fact. I've got the same issue on my truck and I just ignored it and run with out a choke now. It was really tough getting her started last weekend.

Yes Mark, that was the next think...the warm air supply to the air cleaner. I was thinking of building some kind of shroud out of sheet metal but will wait until I have the headers. Also I was thinking that with the higher under hood temperatures with headers maybe I should build some kind of flex hose to air cleaner system to bring cool air in from in front of the grill or something. What do you think?
Yes King, you've talked me into the headers. Too bad I got the duals installed and now I will have to try and take it all apart...that's probably going to be hardest part of the whole job.
Sedric,
If underhood temps are an issue, which there are not, simply wrap your headers with thermal wrap. I'm not sure what that stuff is worth these days but you used to be able to do it for about $60.00. Use the little hose clamps to hold the wrap and trim the excess back after you got them the way you want them to avoid cutting your hands to slivers during installation.

Yup, I was thinking the same thing WRT a cold air supply. I've seen the flex tube in Advance auto, but no attachment hardware.
If I get my hot air setup installed this weekend I will take some pictures and find some place to post them (or I'll e-mail them). I don't really have the fabrication tools to do a great job of it so it won't be pretty. Maybe someone out there will have had one made and will be able to point us in the right direction.
I installed the hot air tube today but forgot to bring home the digital camera. I'll take pictures on Monday. Basically, if you look at the Hedman piece (see previous message), I fabricated much the same thing from a piece of 2.5" exhaust pipe. The mounting "ears" were not attached (I don't have access to a welder), but made by cutting the pipe (I'm not gonna try to explain it with words). On top of that I put a 2.5" id to 2.0" od adapter and ran 2" heat riser tube to the air cleaner. Works great and didn't cost me $30 (which is what the Hedman piece costs).
Why not use a carb with an electric choke? Adjustments are easy; you just rotate the choke housing. You can also, I believe, get them in different calibrations to fit your needs. All you need to do is run one +12 volt wire to the unit off the ignition on signal...
