Looks like there needs to be another category???
OR another thread?
Good point though. I have towed up around 9000 to 10000 pounds, up some pretty steep grades up and over the sierra mountains during the warm summer months and never had a coolant problem. Never towed 12000 pounds though. Can't testify to that one.
I seem to remember having read here on FTE that the coolant should be kept at a lower level in the recovery bottle or overflow might happen. I've never taken anything out of mine, but then again, I haven't towed 12000 pounds. Does anyone else remember reading about keeping the coolant level down?
Also, a Ford Shop Forman told me once that the coolant caps on the PSD's aren't the best and will give out, especially if used with a performance programmed engine where temps tend to get a little higher. Don't shoot me, Just what I was told.
Yeah it seems there were a bunch of 05's that were overfilled from the factory. When I picked mine up from the dealer new it had the white crusty on the bottle and it had only had 2 miles on it . Looking at the poll the way it is seems like no mods no problems is the key.
Excuse me PSD6litre40, I couldn't hear you while you were yelling out of your keyboard. Did you say Quadzilla????? That's great. I hope you are happy with it. Really.
Anyway, if you were refering to me as far as being "anti-chip", you are mistaken. I am not anti-anything. I was simply stating what a diesel tech told me. And, of course, he works at Ford, so there might be a little bias there on his behalf. I don't care what people are adding to the performance capabilities of their engines. I really don't. Just passing on some info I picked up. The main thing I tried to pass on was that there was some discussion about leaving the recovery bottle on the low side, equating to possibly resolving some issues people are having with puking coolant.
I hope this helps some folks that are having problems with that.

No Mod No Problems... although I must admit... it would be nice to light those tires up! Just doesn't have the guts to turn them over from a stop But it does seem to get up a go.
Well, I'm running the SCT performance tune and it has blown a little coolant out of the cap. Here's the deal with the coolant issue. If you are gonna run high egt's you probably will blow a little coolant out the top. The coolant will flash boil because of that egr mess. Anyhow a good solution is to have the coolant at the minimum level or shut off the egr. I'm pretty sure a good SCT tuner can turn the egr off for you.
