Any problems with engine/drive train after adding intake, exhaust and or programmer?

I have a question for everyone out there who's added a cold air intake, aftermarket exhaust and or a programming module to their 6.0...has anyone had any engine problems or tranny problems since doing so??? The reason why I ask is the dealer I go to for service told me that they view any addition of aftermarket parts as voiding the warranty. I have about 50,000 left on my engine, but would like to increase my mpg as I drive about 100 miles per day and would like to get better than the 15-17mpg that I am currently getting.

I'm thinking about adding a cold air intake and a 4 inch exhaust for now and eventually adding a programmer when the money is available. Just want to see if anyone has had any problems with the engine or transmission after adding these to help me make my decision as to whether or not I want to void my warranty.

Thanks.

Adding any of those items does not automatically void the warranty. However, if an aftermark part is the cause of the damage then there would not be any warranty coverage. If damage is not the result of the aftermarket part(s) then there is coverage. The problem is that if a dealer, Ford rep wants to be a hard *** about it, they could say the aftermarket part is the cause whether it was or not. This would leave you with the choice of paying out of pocket or spending a great deal of time and possible money fighting for coverage. I have added a tuner and a turbo back exhaust without any problems at all, in fact, I love them. The power boost is incredible and if I'm not too heavy on the pedal I do see some improvement in MPG, 1-2. As for the air intake, the stock intake flows air very well and filters better than some of the more common aftermarket intakes. Some people swear by the AFE, but many like myself have left the stock in place. What you will really see with the exhaust and tuner is lower EGT's (exhaust) and massive power (tuner) not huge gains in MPG. If you do decide to add a tuner and exhaust take the time and do some research. Make sure you end up with a quality exhaust and tuner (i.e. one that makes safe power gains). Whether you decide to mod or not, good luck.

TXPSD,

How many miles have you put on since adding your mods? I am aware of the fact that mods don't "automatically void the warranty" but from talkign with the service manager at the dealership he made it sound pretty much like if something went wrong they were going to blame the failure on the aftermarket mods...

I only have a about 3500 miles with the mods, some of the other people I have talked to on this site have up to 60k with mods and no problems. If you think your dealer might be an *** about it check around for another dealer with a good service dept. A quality aftermarket exhaust will not cause any damage of any kind, it's the tuner that gets some of the dealers panties in a wad. I number of the tuners have the capability to set your truck back to "stock" before taking it in for work and leave no trace that there ever was a tuner installed. I only say that because it can help you avoid an arguement. If one of my mods were to cause the damage I'm going to pay for it, mainly because I have a conscience, (sigh) it's a burden sometimes. I just don't want to take a chance on Ford blaming the mod to try to get away with not doing a repair that should legitimately be done under warranty.

that was my thought on the repair...currently I only have funding to do intake and exhaust...having owned a 5.0 mustang in the past I know that Ford loves to choke their engine performance via intake and exhaust and just wanted to let the diesel breath more before I added a programmer...figured I'd ask the service manager what he thought... my brother just added edge juice with attitude monitor and exhaust to his Cummin's Ram...and his service manager said as long as the parts are made specifically for his truck they'll (the dealership) cover any issues he has...too bad they don't service ford's as well...and they're 680 miles away!!!

Ford put a hell of a lot better intake on their diesel than any gasser they build. I suggest you do a search for threads about it and then decide if it will be worth the money to replace it. As for "friendly" dealers like that of your brother's, keep in mind that it the manufacturer that provides the warranty and the manuf.'s rep who will make the final call if there is a major repair needed related to the mod. There are a ton of mods you can do to the truck and your head will spin as you try to figure out which is the best for you. I like what I have but that doesn't mean you would be. Try not to let any one person steer you to a particular product, check 'em all out. Good luck with your search.

Be aware that you could loose a few MPG's with an exhaust change. I (and others on this board) experienced a 2-3 MPG reduction when I replaced my stock exhaust with a 3.5" DP and 4" everything else system. I left the CAT in place. It did reduce the EGT's around 150 degrees, but the reduced back pressure seems to have caused the computer to compensate with a change for the worse in mileage. Truck performs and drives great otherwise. Be warned....
