In a car like that, a 351W built to a 393 will be faster than a 460 car, it will also be streetable. Putting a 460 in a car like that will be a total hack job...
guys put 460's into stangs all the time, but that was before the stroker market really took off. you can do anything you want and its your call on how it looks. if you cut corners it will look and handle like sh! t but if you do it right then it can look very clean and professional. i do think a 393 or 408 stroker would be a better build but if you want the cool factor of saying its a 460 by all means do it. check out stangnet.com and corral.net for more info
A 351, even with a stroker kit, is a lot lighter than a 460. Drag performance is about average power(in the rpm between shifts), weight and traction. Figure out the power levels you can afford with both engines. The power you need to know is the average power in the rpm range you'll be running. A c6 has 2.46, 1.46, 1 gearing. In my truck (optimally) that would mean 3000-5000 rpm. Then get the weights of both engines and your current motor. Add each engine weight to the weight of you car without it's engine. Divide each total weight by that correct engine's average power. The one with the better(higher) power/weight ratio will be faster.
the 86 tbird is a fox body car, so there is plenty of aftermarket stuff that will work for either a 351W or 460. everything from k-members to motor plates. if the streets where you live require emissions testing, you may want to proceed with caution with the 460...less room in the engine compartment for front dress but it can be done...i agree with burns, do whatever rocks your boat! 460w/c6 much greater weight/cost than 351Ww/any tranny. cheers, garsten
