simple oil checking question

I noticed my 300 has a long safe range. Is it a quart from add to full like most others? And how far down the stick should i let it go before i add any to it? I have always heard all the way to the add, but i never go more that 3/4 of a quart low. What does everbody else do?

Later!! chris

It is 1 quart from thetop to the bottom of chekered area. I check mine and add accordingly based on where the level is at. It shouldn't matter for our applications if it is a little overfilled. Everytime I change my oil I just put in 6 quarts and new filter and I don't check it afterwards. I know, bad habit, but I've changed it enough to know that 6 quarts with a new filter will bring it right up to the top level.

you are correct it does take 6 quarts for an oil change and it does take 1 qt between the add and full marks.
