Np-435

I have an 86 ford f-150 with np-435 transmission. The truck pops out of third gear, even if you hold it in making third gear pretty much un-usable. I posted on this before and i was told that towing the truck can do this as stated in the article below:

http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np435.htm

What i need to know, if this is the case, is it worth trying to rebuild and fix the transmission if it is fixable. Or should i just keep my eye out for an np-435. Im pretty sure i can get an np-435 for under 100 as i have found a private junkyard with a bunch of 80's ford. What would you do, and is my third gear fixable or forever gone?

I'd do a rebuild.

It would also be a valuable learning experience.

Like Rossta86 posted, $50.00+ and a weekend of work.

I picked up a complete rebuild kit for my NP435 for $165 from Bronco Graveyard...it came with everything but new gears: bearings, bushings, seals, gaskets, thrust washers, syncro rings, everything to make the ol gear jammer shift like new. Like everyone else said... takes a good part of a weekend to get the job done. Good luck!

How did the rebuild come out?

Were there any special tools you needed to buy/rent/borrow?

The rebuild wasn't too difficult, just make sure you have a nice clean, well lit workbench or table to lay all the parts on. Just lay everything out in order as you take it apart, take your time and look at what comes in your rebuild kit, and make sure you have everything you need. Just take it one step at a time and you'll do fine. These old 4 speeds are really pretty simple to work on. I cannot recall needing any special tools, I recommend having a plastic/rubber dead blow hammer and a couple different sized brass punches on hand.

Im not so much worried about doing the rebuild my self but what worries me is in the article on the site:

http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np435.htm

it says "Improperly towing any vehicle with the NP435 transmission can cause the very prompt destruction of third gear bore and its mainshaft journal due to insufficient oiling." which i don't know if the third gear bore and its mainshaft journal can be repaired with just a "normal" rebuild kit? Does anyone know or can give me any more information on this? thanks for all the responses so far

A Cautionary Issue on Towing
Improperly towing any vehicle with the NP435 transmission can cause the very prompt destruction of third gear bore and its mainshaft journal due to insufficient oiling.
If you must flat tow, and have a transfer case, you may set it in full neutral and place the NP435 in any gear to prevent mainshaft spin. However, note that many transfer cases themselves do not allow for flat towing.

Preferably, you may wish to disconnect the rear drive shaft. Rear axle lockout hubs may be a worthwhile addition for this reason.

We have seen and heard of a few incidents of this over the years, the worst of which producing a complete friction welding of third gear to its mainshaft.

This is one of the only quirks of the 435, and easily avoidable.

They mean haveing this vehicle towed not towing with it.
