Borg Warner T19 compatability

Are Ford T19 input and output shafts the same from the 60s through the 90s? Reading Novak's page on the T19 seems to suggest I can take a T19 from any Ford and swap it with any other.

The Novak Guide to the Borg-Warner T18 & T19 Transmissions

I found this and I want to buy it:

Mine slipped in place of the 3.03 3-speed that was in there before. The input, that is, I needed a driveshaft and combination u-joints at the other end. There are three low-gear ratios available. I have the 4.02 low version which is found in diesel trucks. It provides a usable first and better spacing.

T-19 introduced in 1973 F350. Prior years, T-19 only installed in F500 and larger trucks.

Was it the T-18 before that? Aren't the T19 and the T18 externally identical and therefore interchangeable? I know the internal components are different - first gear, I believe - but a T19 can be swapped with a T18, right?

Reason I'm asking is because I want one for my '68 F-250 and I want to know how to buy the parts.

T-18 & NP435 introduced in 1965 F100/350. 1964 and earlier F100/350's used the T-98.

No, they are not externally identical. Once you determine you truly have a T-19, it can be difficult to determine which one you have because the numbers cast into it do not indicate the gear ratios or original application. The best way to find a unit with a 4.02 low is to remove it from a diesel truck.

I put a T19 from an '86 F350 Diesel in my '68 in place of the NP435. It was a bolt-in swap except for needing a combination U-joint like 6t6merc describes. I just took the old u-joint out of my driveshaft and one from the truck that the donor tranny came from into my local Napa store and they matched them up with a combination u-joint they had in stock.

However...looking at the tranny you show ion the pic above, it's different from mine. The one you show has an extended output shaft, I suppose it's for a married 4X4? Mine was 4X2 so the rear yoke was right on the back of the tranny with almost no tailshaft. You didn't say if your truck is 4X4 or 4X2, if it's 4X2 then I'd say that tranny won't work for you.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know.

I suspected it was a 4x4 shaft so I skipped it as my truck is a 2wd.

Eventually I'll collect the parts for a conversion and get rid of my C6 so that's the reason for my question.

T19s from mid-80s diesel 4X2s are fairly easy to come by, so just keep looking. I scored mine for free, my favorite price! Occasionally I miss the granny low, but I do like the fully synchronized gears.
