I have an '04 XLT 4x4 5.4 extended cab. I use it everyday for work and play with a load in the bed which puts the truck just over the 7000 lbs. mark. I now have 39,000 miles on it. With the Hypertech tuner and a K&N filter, it accelerate faster than stock without the weight in the bed and it eliminated the dead spot that I see a lot of complaints about. This truck is not babied at all. I have pulled 6,000 lbs + in 100 degree heat and able to maintain highway speeds without a bog. It seems that the more miles I put on it the better it seems to get. Still no squeeks or rattles. In my opinion, its the best 1/2 ton truck out there, whether you drive 1,000 miles from home for vacation, pull a trailer, load it with tools and ladders or just to have the best looking truck in the neighborhood. I'm not saying that it's bulletproof, but with this many miles in less than a year without problems assures me that I bought the right truck.
'05 fx4...my speedometer was off by 10%, but they responded by fixing the problem and i was able to convince them to give me ford's 100k extended warranty
transmission would make an odd "drop" feeling on a seemingly random 3 to 2 shift while cruising, but they reflashed it and it's better than ever
i had a headlight violently explode while the truck was sitting in my driveway and they replaced the entire set of headlamps
my dealership (coconut point) has been very very accomodating
I love this truck. Wouldn't trade it for any other. I had a few small issues (wouldn't take gas, leaky fog light, rattle in back window, clunk on take-off) but the dealer corrected all of them shortly after I purchased it.
Thanks to all that have responded. Ive actually placed an order for an 06. I hope Ford has finally gotten their act together for this model year. If its anything like my 04, boy are they going to be sorry.

2004 FX4 with 27k miles.
Inbound, what was the rattle from the back window? I get a strange noise from back there over really rough road surfaces, but I always thought it was the jack or something under that area. What did they do to fix it? Thanks.
I have a 05 Screw with 4100 miles. A few little rattles, but other than that it's been a great truck. Really love the room in the back. Got almost 19mpg on a long trip. Would recommend this truck to anyone. What a difference from my 95!

Hey, ReForder. The rattle wasn't constant sometimes it wouldn't rattle for a week and then come back with a vengeance. It didn't always take a rough surface to rattle; often it would rattle on smooth roads. I have the repair statement at home but from memory I think they simply added some padding to the inside of the back cab wall to keep the pulley/cable from banging against the cab. I know they pulled the window out because they scratched the paint around the window! I haven't had a problem since. I can grab the statement and let you know exactly what it says if you want.
What exactly were your probems with the '04? I am currently looking at buying an '04 Screw XLT 4x4 with only 6300 miles on it.
Thanks,
Cliff
Constant rattling power sliding window, new passenger seat defective from the factory, new rear gears, 3 new driveshafts, 4 new tires, defective throttle body from the factory, and basically everything else covered by the TSBs. Im not saying you should write off the 04 year, but make sure you do your homework. I bought mine, knowing there were some problems with the year. The rebates were VERY good when I bought it. I rolled the dice, and seemingly lost a year later. Good luck in your search though.

I just drove home a Ford Certified Used '04 Lariat Supercrew last night with only 14000 miles on it.
If you get the truck make sure that you get Fords ESP plan good up to 6yr/75000 miles bumper to bumper, I managed to get this all included.
I also qualified for the 3.9% / 60 mo. Ford Certified financing, which made this truck very attractive, especially considering I had every intention of buying a new truck.
After doing the math, it would have cost me $8000 more in payments to go for a new truck of lesser trim for a difference in 14000 miles, and a much smaller 3/36000 warranty on the new truck I was looking at.

Inbound, no need to dig it up. You gave me enough info already, thanks. I may just have my dealer look into that and the tranny clunk (we all seem to have). But I'll wait until the next service interval.
All in all, I would not change this truck for anything. Not great on gas, but has no problem with get up and go. No vibrations (knocking on wood) or shudders to speak of. I would HIGHLY recommend the extended service plan, at least on powertrain components. I imagine the 4wd systems on these things are not cheap to fix once out of warranty.
I have an 05 screwfx4 30,000 miles with a true flow air system on will lite the rears up with no problem even on dry payment have had to have the computer flashed twice do to changes mine was built in dec.
