75% do more harm for society then good
25% I'd give them the shirt off my back

This year alone I have had two trucks stolen (one from home one from business), and I have had one truck broken into and might as well be stolen. NOT ONE SINGLE TIME did ANY cop come out to investigate, take prints, or write a repot. I actually got the feeling I was bothering them by calling.

To make matters worse, right after I recieved a phone call about the first truck getting broken into I was driving down the road and got pulled over for speeding. I came INCHES away from laying this cop out. I was screaming in his face about being a worthless MF and how cops could care less that I was a victom of a robbery, but they are RIGHT THERE to give me a ticket for speeding. The city makes $$$$$ off your speeding tickets, they dont make any when your robbed.

The cops I will salute are the ones handing out tickets on the freeway in the middle of rush hour to the people taking advantage of the car pool lane.

freeloaders

I'm a 45yrs old plus white guy, married with two kids. I'm not even close to satisfied. The officers that I have seen are a bunch of freeloaders. There may be a few good ones out there, but I haven't seen them. Most of them seem totally worthless. They have the easiest job you can imagine, and we all pay for it. They ride around in a car that someone else pays for, and someone else pays for fuel. The 'life on the line' thing you sometimes hear is just that, a line. Around here it is pure unadulterated BS. We have a low crime rate because most residents are armed and would-be wrong doers know it. With a response time as long as two weeks if you call them, why would a crimnal fear the cops ? But an angry citizen with a gun, yeah they fear that. The sheriff in my county goes to church with one of my coworkers. The coworker says he knew the guy even before he was the sheriff, and that he is supposedly a good guy. But his department is totally out of control. Who is supposed to police them ? We have had deputies caught dealing drugs and leaning on female motorists for 'favors'. yeah, those guys were fired, but how did they ever get on the force in the first place ? When one of our state troopers was caught assaulting women he had pulled over, he was transfered to another part of the state rather than disciplined. To whom does one report the state police ? The cops suffer from a poor image because they won't, or aren't able, to keep their ranks clean from within. Our county sheriff's deputies have, within the last few years, shot a drunk guy who had an axe. He is paralized now. How is it that four officers cannot subdue one drunk without shooting at him ? And then there was the guy with a butter knife, he was shot and killed. Why is a set of four officers are afraid of one mentally retarded guy with a butter knife ? They could have asked his family, who were there, screaming not to shoot, how to grab him. But it was easier just to shoot. Don't these guys have any training ? Or is the training they are recieving faulty ? One fellow was shot and killed because he wouldn't get a building permit for a fence he had put up. Another had his house torched by police after he had offered to buy some more modest clothes for a pair of young women who he thought were dressed trashy. The cops wanted to arrest him for this, and he said no. They burned his house down, and shot one of their own officers in the back, and accidentaly killed him. The homeowner ecaped out the back door right under the nose of a couple of dozen officers. The cops were busy keeping the fire department away from the house. The fire guys showed up, but the cops wouldn't let them help. The guy who wanted to buy the girls some clothes was blamed for the officers death, even though the autopsy showed him shot through the back. The guy was running for his life, and he knew it. The state troopers found him a few days later and shot him 47 times. While he was asleep. real professional those guys. I have no use for them at all. I'll stop typing now, I'm getting too angry to properly moderate my own comments. It is time for me to switch to another topic. DinosaurFan, @ his Dad's house

58 and of the majority in here, my towns problem is 69 sq. miles and not enough officers. if we have a problem and the duty officers are on the other side of town your over the problem by the time they get to you. they try hard and are great guys. just not enough of them.
but if i cross over the line into warwick, new york. beware 2 mph's over the limit and bang $135.00 please.or they stand in the midlle of the road on the state line checking inspection stickers, seat belts and tires.

The police in the Bremerton/Silverdale area are ok, professional, don't toy with monir offences, etc. The problem I have is with the way the departments are run- they are more of a money making agency than a law enforcement agency anymore. If you do something, and they will make a buck by busting you for it, they will nail you to the wall over it. I guess that is the way it is over the whole state, but moreso on the eastern side.

In Wisconsin cops are pretty good, they won't pull you over for every little thing. But in Idaho (I lived there from 1999-2002) they really suck. Town was really small, no crime, so they don't have anything better to do than to pull you over for every little thing. I got pulled over for driving 15 mph on the parking and he said I was speeding (didn't get ticket), or I got pulled over because license place cover is too black and he couldn't read my license number. That is stupid, K-Mart sells them, a lot of people are using them, and he tells me that's he can't read my license number? Get glasses buddy.

Somewhat Satisfied...

I am a retired P.O. and I DO know that the job is a very complex one. The complexities range from the individual officer's mental make up (there ARE a few that should NOT be on the job) to the politcal "winds" and which way they are "blowing" on any given day. Most of my 25 years were good BUT... I've seen a lot of folk's (and some of my own) misery during the years and by my last year I was ready to leave. The "modern" police world made me a dinosaur. I could never function with today's legalities and restricions on doing the job soooo, I retired and never looked back. I am now doing light landscaping and mind my own business. I like the older vehicles so I bought my '80 F100 (found FTE)and a '59 Chevy BelAir (found ChevyTalk too). I keep them in original condition and do the "car cruise thing". Later

That State Cops here and the DNR agents are good guys. The county deputies are excellent cops, the three I mentioned so far are respectable, well trained and in general are a class above what would make them good police officers!

The city I live in, a town of 10,000 or so, half of them are mediocre at best. The other half are either **** poor or pretty good. I have had run ins with a fe of them and I will agree it is a few bad ones that tarnish the many good. One of the city cops (now a shift supervisor) I had as a little league baseball coach and he is a man I do respect and he actually is a good cop. When I was younger I had mostly speeding problems with them, and I drank alot but never got caught because I'd drink in the sticks and I wouldn't drive afterwards. One time the supervisor from above pulled me over for doing 60 in a 25 with 4 guys in the back of the truck (his son and I wresteled together in junior high and high school) and he knew all of us in the truck rather well. He chewed us out, checked my license and insurance, chewed us out some more and said I'd better not see this again and sent us on our way. What he did probably hit more at home to us that a ticket, plus we remembered his leiniency!
After I quit drinking but was still out late at night, and usually the designated driver, is when the poop hit the fan with them. I got pulled over one night for possible DUI (hadn't drank in 6 months) and the guy asked me 4 times if I had been drinking because I crossed the centerline of the street, which was also on a sharp curve where the centerline did not exist (knew that cause I drove by it 10 times a day since my shop was on that street). After that they followed my truck everytime it went into town till the time it left town, dad thought I was blowing smoke till he drove it one night and it got followed the whole time he was in town. About 4 months of this and a guy (the supervisor from above) ask why I didn't drive my big truck near as much, I said because you're officers follow it as soon as it gets to town till the time I leave town, showed him the ticket from a few months back. He looked at who wrote it and said he'll look into it. Within a week I could have driven 90 through town and not got pulled over or even looked at, the cops would see my truck go by and turn the opposite direction after that.
Like I said, 1 or 2 bad apples spoils the whole bushel!

I'm somewhat satisfied with the city police here, and the RCMP out at dad's. A lot of the problems here come from lack of funding from the province (they just pulled one guy from a gang unit to to regular policing). So that's not cool. Some are pretty high on themselves here though. One night last winter I couldn't sleep, so I was out for a drive. Came across a cop car stuck on the PEDESTERIAN path in a snowbank. Don't know why he was there or how he got there, but he was there nonetheless. There was another, un-stuck cop there too. He was laughin his *** off at the other guy, as was I, cept I was only laughin on the inside. Anyway, I offered to pull him out, completely free of charge. He quickly refused to let me, and figured twistin that 4.6L up to 6000rpm, slammin it from reverse to drive was a better choice . Anyway, I helped the other officer push him out. Once we got him out, the other cop walked up, shook my hand, and said "thanks." I turned to the formerly stuck cop, expecting somethin similar. All I got was a quick see ya, and he was back in his car.

They need to crack down on the drugs though. There's a big drug problem here now, and not just guys smokin a J on their couch. It's a meth problem. They've raided two cookhouses so far I think. But they need more men on the case to fight it.

Also got a gang issue right now. One night this summer, some kids in Wawanesa were havin a party. Some guys from Brandon (usual troublemakers) showed up, causes some crap, then took off. Turned out they came and got the Indian Posse, thats the main gang trouble right now, went back out, and beat the holy hell out of these kids. I'm not too terribly scared right now though. I mean, its a cab home from the bar rather than walkin, but thats about it. And if they do try somethin, me and my buddy Winchester will fix it up real quick.

I"m a white male, 37 years old. I voted not satisfied, but my lack of statisfaction is not due to the officers. My complaint has to do with the burecrats and politicians who have basically forced law enforcement to spend time and resources on things that really don't add to the safety of the community as a whole.
EX: seat belt laws. If a motorist is driving without his seat belt on, he might be putting himself in added potential danger - but he isn't a menace to the general public. BUT thanks to the burecrats and politicians, now the officer has to ticket non-belted motorists or they are reprimanded. (I could rant about this for hours, but I'l spare you.)

Last week a dude that lives with me spit in some girls face (yeah i know its not cool) well a little while later the cops bust the door down (7 of them total) and arrest him at gun point. A little extreme if you ask me. They came in without permission, damaged the house, and were swinging guns around in my house with a 2 year old right in front of them. At least they could have knocked and i would have kicked his **** out to the steet to them, but thats damage that i wont see compensation for. A complete rediculas way of arresting someone who spits in a persons face. He now has a charge of battery against him, i have a broken door, and theres a 2 year old thats scared of cops. What retards.

They are all like this. Ive been pulled over with BS stops sooo many times. Its absolutely getting out of hand. I dont dress like a gang banger, i wear blue jeans and t-shirts or a carheart jacket, its not like i look like im out to kill anyone. I drive respectable vehicles, they dont look like i stole them.... And still...i get pulled over at least once a month on a bogus stop. One time i got pulled over in my play truck for going 70 in a 40...right...the truck is a 300 6 with a t-18 and 3.55 gears and i was in 3rd gear...if i was pushing it..i could go 45 tops. A week later i get pulled over by the same cop for "miss use of acceleration" WTF is that!? He said i wasn't letting him pass....riiiight i was going 55 in a 55 and he comes up next to me to pass me and he just slows down and stays there, what a retard. Ive been pulled over for undersized mudflaps...the truck is not lifted at all, it has 31X10.5 inch tires and the mudflaps are 11 inches wide, not to mention, i dont legally have to have mudflaps. Ive been pulled over for waisting fuel...ok..i paid for it...

The cops around here are ego-tripped retards. The drive very nice impalas, camaros and ive even seen a vette. so to the CDAPD this FU goes out to you guys.

I am uncertain to this day what to think of the peace officers of Tipton County Tennessee, whereas in other places things were fairly plain and obvious.

The law was the law.

Further deponent declines to comment upon...

My vote was for "Somewhat satisfied".

It depends on the jurisdiction. The CHP by and large are top notch...fortunately they patrol our local country roads.

The local sheriff, well, it goes cop by cop. Lot's of deference to the old timers and their kids, who seem to be allowed to be "delinquents at will".

To be fair, the Sheriff Dept is understaffed and has a lot of territory to cover, and they're not a bunch of hard cases as far as I can tell.

Local city police seem to be the ones who have watched too many episodes of Cops. and that goes for small town all the way up to SF.
