Police
The Bay Area, CA has lots of jurisdictions. I travel through several of them daily. There are some cowboys on bikes that could probably serve their communities better than popping commuters of a morning, but most are hard working folks. I've noticed over the last couple of years that they spend more time being "domestic counselors" than they should have to. But I'd rate most of the Law Enforcement in the Bay Area a solid B.

I know a lot of the older guys on the dept. (Yup... Barney Fife types.)
Newbies on the dept. . . Still wet behind the ears. They couldn't solve a crime if it happened in front of them and they saw the 'bad guys' doin' the deed.
And yes, I'd say that to their faces, too!
Age: 51+
Race: I don't race anymore. It's illegal. (Colorblind, actually.) I look like my avatar (gray hair), except I have a mustache.

I'm not white. I'm mixed race. 37 years old.
Local police are top notch, but it's a small town. The cops in Yukon down the road are about as crooked as any I've ever met. We had a local scandal where a bunch of them were having sex with some girl at a convenience store (in the aisles) during the night shift. A customer spotted them through the front window and reported it. The girl claimed she was fooling around with the first guy and the other guy's intimidated her into complying (aka rape if it's true). Of course the police union claimed nothing happened, but several of them either quit or got fired over the scandal. It also came out that one of them had a restraining order against him for threatening his girlfriend. Hard to believe that clown carried a badge and gun.
One of the LT's got busted for assaulting some guy after a fender bender shortly after the sex scandal too. I don't mean just an accusal either, the State Police pushed for charges after reviewing video from a nearby factory surveilance camera. It proved he was lying about what happened in the fight.
OKC cops are just as bad, but at least they mostly keep their pants on while they're on duty. Just a gang with badges.

I'm satisified with the police in general, however, in my neighborhood, there is something to be desired. They don't go out of their way to make me dissapointed with them, but they don't act like professional cops.
We have a very low crime rate, but the cops really need to start cracking down on the crackheads hanging in town after dark, and during the day.
We live near Dallas, the state guys are serious but very fair. County sheriffs are EXTREMELY strict around here, most carry 12 gauge shotguns (we still live "out there" I guess) in their cars just in case. Our police department is pretty big now, in the last five years we've gone from 5,000 to almost 30,000.
They are pretty thick around here, 'specially right before and after school. Several very well known areas they practically ALWAYS radar around here. On the other hand, you get back away from the main part of the city and you will never see any of them.
You can get away with lots in town most of the time. I take a backroad to the highway to another highway. Speed limits 40 and 45 on the highways, respectively. At 60 most ignore you.
They started trading in their Crown Vics for Chevy Tahoes (yes the SUVs) and hired many more officers and it's gotten a bit stricter lately, with a couple of complaints against one officer recently. Crime is practically non-existant though, which makes it good.
About a month ago they through a souped up and unmarked 'vette into the mix. Recently clocked by a guy at a gas station doing 160 through town chasing bank robbers from a nearby city. Wish I coulda watched that, but the school was on lockdown *rolls eyes*.
Overall, very satisfied.

guns, women, etc. Eventually I came to and remembered I was talking to a guy with
a badge and a gun...lol.
After this I ran into him a few times at our local starbucks. I made aquaintances with a few of his fellow officers and got to know Bill - his leutenant pretty well also. The rest is history - good folks the whole bunch of them. Professional in every manner - they do what they gotta do as officers of the law, but never forget they are people too. . Won't bust your chops over BS either. These are the state police.
Our local PD has a mix - mostly good. I remember pulling over the curbed grass area to park my truck in that same Starbucks parking lot for my morning joe when the entire lot was full. Had nowhere else to park. A local PD cruiser parked next to me as close to the curb as possible but still on the blacktop. My bro thought "Oh boy, your gonna hear it now". Suddenly this friggen hot redhead gets out and says "I wish I could do that, it's like this every morning"....had a beautiful smile. Course part of the reason she may have just let it roll off was seeing how hot I am.
County Sheriff is bad news. FBI has busted two of them here within the last 12 years for laundering, blackmail, and drug dealing. Seems every deputy is indoctrinated to act like Rambo. It's the Sheriff who does all the easy work but seems to get the lion's share ofunds allocation. It's left to local PD to cough up the resources and take the risk necessary to bring down dangerous thugs while the Sheriff sends in a trained 18yo to buy liquer from an unsuspecting sales clerk - single mothers no less. Then the elite team of the Sheriffs Office comes in like SWAT while S.O. helicopters cover the rear exit of the grocery store...lol S.O. is a friggen joke.
Have a problem in the city of Spokane WA and want a cop to show up? You need to know how to ask for one in this neck of the woods. Make sure that in your phone call you use the words "you need to get a cop out here fast or this just might get physical". Always use the word(s) might and never use the word will or is going to get. By using the words I noted, you will probably get a cop within 30 minutes or so.
The cops here are polite and all that, and from what I've seen and heard they don't hassle minorities. However, they need to provide decent and resonable service to the people of the community and not selectivly choose what laws they think are worth bothering with. By ignoring so many basic laws, they have created an environment in which criminals know what they can do, so long as a cop isn't watching. In reality, being a true police officer and not just a law enforcement official would go along ways towards solving things. Like so many people around here, I have no respect whatsoever for they city cops here. County sheriff, well that's a whole different ballgame. Those guys function like a good police agency should
