I am a Criminal Justice Major. I was told to conduct a survey about the public's view of the police. This is an excellent way to do this survey. This Ford internet site represents the entire country. If only you could tell me if you guys were white, black, hispanic, etc. The public's view of the police varies greatly with race.
From what little I have dealt with the police in Fargo here (speeding, and a friend was almost arrested), they have been great. They are fair, down to earth people that are not out to get you. I give them a thumbs up.
Satisfied, The Majority of them here are very good, I know quite a few deputys in two countys and some of the city officers. There are a couple of bad apples in the small city force though.
Small town MN. White, 30 male. Post grad education.
I never have much of a problem with the cops - I've had to call them on my neighbor's son (25 or so, big mouth, crack head) a few times. Each time, they worked with me in ways that make me smile to this day. The first time, female cop, told her about him threatening to kill me... She said "I'll just write up your side, here's the complaint #. If I go talk to him, I'll have to write down his side and he'll lie anyway" ...
Once, a cop gave me a crappo ticket, unsafe backing - I was backing out of a dead-end with my '74 highboy, and stopped at the stop sign. Stupid cop got scared seeing this truck backing out of a blind dead-end, so he wrote me up. Fought it in court, the judge warned the cop "I better not see you back in here with any of this stupid crap" - apparently he had been there before with petty stuff. But I still got a "guilty" for that one. That's the only time I've had a bad time with a cop.
I do not have tattoos, more than two earings (in one ear) at the time, dress in jeans and t-shirts, I look like a regular blue-collar self-respecting individual.
My step-son, also white, dressed like an urban thug, would get harrassed like you wouldn't believe... he got tickets for riding his bike without a bell and on the wrong side of the road ... Of course, he was a thug, and a druggie at the time (now straightened out and being an electrician), I think the cops can smell kids like that. The more they bust their chops, charging them with all sorts of little violations, the more of a record they get so that when they finally get caught with the big stuff (like 6 baggies of heroin), they wind up in rehab for 15 months... I don't think it's just contempt, it's that they are giving them a little record so their parents get the idea that they are not in the right place...
Here in Las Vegas, NV. I feel that the police do a fine job. Of course a few bad apples will always spoil the bunch, The police have a diffacult job to do and they do the best they can. White Male 30ish.
White male 26yrs
the police are good at collecting funds for the county, not real good at much else!!
Radar guns and breathalyzer seems to be the only thing they are good at.
The police up here both the State and the City be it Anchorage or Palmer have lost any respect I had for them. Within the last few months Anchorage has has to put two officers on administrative leave for possesing child ****, both on home and WORK computers. One put a video camera up in his daughters bedroom. Another one was caught for molestation. A state trooper was busted for raping a woman. A local officer was caught on video stating that "just put it in little baggies" It was during a search of a residence. The owner of the residence suspected the police might try to plant evidence.
I just can't really trust any law officer right now. I have had a few breakins, made reports, had officers come out, but have I ever gotten any follow up reports from my local police... NO!
I'm just frustrated that they don't seem to be doing an adequate job, to busy doing things that arent "becoming of an officer" They really need to clean up their act.
It's sad to say, but I had started to go thru the process of becoming a Alaska State Trooper. I had already taken the written (scored very well for a first timer), passed the physical agility test, and went to the interview. It died there when I got my divorce..... Now with all that has occured lately in all the ranks, I'm kinda glad I didn't become one for the simple fact that people would judge me the same way I judge officers...as noit being trustworthy, and I see myself as being honest and trustworthy.
Sorry for the long rant....but I've been wanting to say this for a long time.
.....I'll let yall know if I get any tickets for doing this....ha, ha, ha
The county dept here is not something to be proud of, but the state boys are pretty good. Unfortunately, with the county dept, it matters who you are or who you know more than what you were doing. When they won't enforce protection orders, I call that pretty poor. As far as tickets and such, I have no experience with them, since I haven't given them a reason.
white male, 18, as for the county sherriffs, I beg your pardon, but they can all go to hell, especially the cheif, there are a few cool ones, but most can go to hell. As for the local cops, there are 4, 2 on duty at a time (2000 people in my town). They arent bad, I always was getting in trouble as a kid, doing dumb stuff and whatnot cause me and my friends were always bored. I know some of them, they are alright. I am satisfied with them, their nice people too. Cant say the same for the state troopers. They always tend to be in a "bad mood".
As for police brutality...dont break the law, and when/if you do, don't resist arrest, simple as that. Do you like mace in your eyes, and a bruise from a nightstick? no, just let them cuff you!
White male, 40's. Police in my area never show up with less than 4 officers. Town used to be known as Lawville, but the State supreme court fixed that. (DUI arrests were out of site but convictions were very low.)
