I have a '94 Ranger XLT manual 5 speed, 2.3L w/136,000 miles on it. The other day it started making a screeching noise between 15mph - 25mph, its at the top end of first gear and second gear. It goes away once I shift from first to second, and then at the top end of 2nd it starts doing the same thing. At first I thought it might be my muffler coming lose or vibrating, because it is almost of high pitched vibration. Its hard to explain noises in words. But I checked my muffler and it didnt seem to be lose anywhere. It doesn't make the noise when its in neutral either, because I rev the engine up pretty high and it doesn't make the noise. Its sounds like its coming from behind the cab possibly right side. If anyone can make sense of what I just said and offer suggestions I would appreciate it. Thanx
If your truck has a 2 piece drive shaft i would suspect the carrier bearing. Other then that, Possibly A u-joint or something in the transmission. I'd start by checking your fluid level and giving everything in the drive line a shake to see if anything is loose.
My brother's 95 mazda had the same noise. I thought that it was a u-joint going bad but there was some sort of hard plastic cover or dust shield where the driveshaft meets the rear axle housing that was making the noise, I am not sure what it is called. I am not sure if the ranger has the same cover but it is worth looking in to.
