I have an 86 ford f150 with a 351w ho that I purchased 1 month ago as a fixer up project. I have had a lot of work done at the local garage ,but that is gettting costly. I'm trying to fix the rest of the little things myself which leads me to my question. When ever I try to start my truck when the engine is cold it takes several pumps of the accelerator to get it to start. I would say about 5-7 pumps before turning the ignition and then I have to hold the gas peddle down 1/3 of the way to get it to start and then keep it running. When the engine is warm it starts like a new truck. The truck only has 75000 miles so I dont think it is a conmpression issue. Any ideas?? Thanks.
I put up with same problem for 2 years. Finally I noticed a wet spot on intake manifold under front right side of carb. Accelerator pump diaphragm had gone out. Just a few dollars and about 1 hour work and I'm a happy camper now.
Sounds as if it's not getting enough choke. With the engine stone cold, pull the lid off the air cleaner and look at the choke. Give the throttle one pump and see if the choke closes all the way. If not, then there's your problem.
