I have a '92 Ford F-150 four wheel drive that will not start on the first try after the engine is warm. The truck starts great when the engine is cold, but when it is warm you can try to start the engine and it cranks but will not start. You can turn the key to the off position and then back to start and then it will start up. I have installed a new fuel pressure regulator. I can put a fuel pressure gauge on it while running and it shows 39 psi, but when you cut the engine off the pressure immediately drops to 0 psi. I've been told there is a check valve or ball in the fuel pump module. Is this true and does anyone have an idea if this could be my problem. Truck runs great otherwise. Thanks.
I am not sure exactly how your truck is set up but it does sound to me that there is check valve failure in the fuel system thus allowing fuel pressure to bleed down.
It sounds like you have 2 seperate problems . The fuel check valve definetly sounds like the cause of the pressure bleeding off so fast when the engine is shut off . The hard warm starts sounds like a sensor related problem , Any trouble codes stored ?
There are no codes stored. The truck starts great in the morning, winter or summer. It is after the truck comes up to normal operating temperature, cut it off, let it set for 10 to 15 minutes. When you go to start it, it cranks but doesn't start. Just cut the key off and then try to start it again and it always starts right up. From what I have been told, the '92 was the first year for the fuel delivery module in the tank. Is the check valve part of the fuel delivery module?
The Ford manual says there are 3 areas where you can lose fuel pressure.
1. fuel pump check ball
2. pressure regulator leakage
3. leaking fuel injector
You are supposed to block the fuel lines in different areas to determine where the leak is. Do you think leaky injectors could cause hard starting when warm? I would think one leaky injector could cause the pressure to leak down, but you wouldn't think it would cause it not to start very well-it would only be one cylinder. Maybe one of those injector cleaner kits that you plug in the fuel line would fix it.
hey check the temp sensor in the water neck i have a 92 150 4*4
with the 5.8 i could start it first thing in the morning great after it was up to temp it took about 45 seconds to start of solid crank with my foot to the floor or if i let it sit till it was cool again it would start fine and if it is the sensor get one from ford i bought one from local parts store and they have warranted three in about nine months next time it goes im getting one from ford
