They work almost like a air shocks. Under normal driving conditions, you run only about 5 psi in them (to keep them inflated) and they do absolutely nothing for you (or to you). If you add very heavy loads, you inflate them to level your ride. They also provide additional roll stability when inflated. On the pickups, almost anyone running a slide in camper puts these on for both stability and increased load capacity. On an Excursion, I assume that the frame is strong enough to handle the extra load on the tongue. I pull a 5th wheel, so I don't know much about pulling heavy loads off the bumper.
