I have an opportunity to buy a 2002 Excursion Limited with a 7.3L PSD engine and 63,000 miles. It is in great shape with no visible problems, and no problems on a test drive earlier today. How does the 7.3L PSD engine compare against the newer 6.0L PSD engine? Does anyone know of any problems with engines of this vintage?
Also, do you think that a diesel Excursion of this vintage and mileage is a good deal at $26,700 for a Limited?
yes, jump on that offer! i have had both a 7.3 and a 6.0, the 6.0 was nothing but problems for me. sure lots of power, but shotty reliability. i would steer away from any used 6.0. or any 6.0 in general. that is a good price for one, considering my 2002 f-350 retails for $35,000, and i got it for $9k under retail. (70,000 miles too). as you can see, 65K miles is NOTHING for a diesel of this nature, some just consider it "broken in". i would get it! good luck!
I bought one 5 months ago for $27,000. Same year 4x4 Limited model at 81000 miles with a Banks Stinger Plus already installed. Now I have 94000 miles with a lot more mods on it. So far mine has been bullet proof even after the Diablo Predator 100hp installed right after I got it.

That does sound like a good deal. I would definitely take a 7.3l over the 6.0l. The 6.0l has several design flaws that will keep it from ever being the engine it should have been.
I just ran a carfax report and it indicates it was a corporate vehicle sold to a corporation in 2002. Is this something I should be worried about? It may indicate that it was maintained very well by the corporate mechanics, but I'm not sure. Anyone have any thoughts?
It seems that it was never used as a tow vehicle since I inspected the hitch and there appears to be no evidence there (no rust or scratches on the receiver).
well if it was a corporate vehicle it may have been thrashed the government vehicles are the worst. run a oasis too and see if any work has been done to it.
If it was thrashed on by some employee, then you would probably see the signs. Not all corporations are huge companies. It may have been a consultant's company car or something. Ask to see maintenance records.
How do I run an Oasis report? Does the Ford dealer need to run that (it is being sold by a Ford dealer now)? Will it show anything different from the Carfax report?
I have also determined that the previous owner traded it in on a new 2005 6.0L PSD Excursion Eddie Bauer. I'm thinking that he liked the vehicle and just wanted an updated version (you know how companies have a three-year replacement policy).

The Ford dealership is the one who runs the Oasis report. What it does, is show any and ALL work performed on that VIN by all Ford dealerships, including recalls, updates, repairs, etc. A very valuable tool since that truck has been under warrenty and should show pretty much all records... If they had the oil changed by Ford, even that will show up. It should be free, so don't let them charge you anything. If they do, call another dealer with the VIN.
I have not purchased it yet, but I have it in my driveway right now for a test drive. The dealer is letting me take it overnight so I can check with a suspension shop on Wednesday to determine what can be done to allow the vehicle to hold additional weight. The specifications I received from the dealer indicate that the vehicle weighs in at 7688 lbs, and the vehicle has a GVWR of 9200 lbs. This sounds adequate, but add in a large family, luggage, and the tongue weight of a travel trailer and that difference disappears, and then some. I'll check it out with the shop in the morning and see what they suggest.
Just returned from the suspension shop, where they recommended that I not install additional springs. That would make the ride extremely harsh ALL THE TIME and I do not need the extra support all the time. He recommended a shop nearby that installs air bag systems. I called that shop and the price I am being quoted for either Firestone or Airlift air bags is $700.00 ($350 for the kit with compressor and $350 to install). Can someone help me understand what these are and how they are used on the Excursion? Does this seem like a reasonable price? Do you prefer one over the other?
Thank you for your help. I have learned so much from this forum in a short period of time.
