Poor Boyd!!!!

I don't know if anyone else saw last nights episode of Overhaulin, they redid a Mustang that came out awesome. Boyd Coddington lost of two of his workers, the painter and the CNC Machine operator to Chip Foose, who does the show. They are rivals and hate each other. Last nights show, they showed the wheel CNC guy making custom rims for the project mustang. What a dig on Boyd. LOL.... Then they bring out his old painter, who is outstanding and say, "You want the best painter for this job, here he is" and Boyd's painter comes out. Double whammy! I'll stop rambling here, just thought it was pretty funny and low blow to Boyd Coddington. LOL.....

Since I dropped the satellite I miss all that now. I preferred Overhaulin to Boyd's show.

I personally don't blame Chip, I blame Boyd. He has good employees and treats them like slaves always pushing them to worker faster and more hours while Dewayne berates them until they burn out. I've only read bits and pieces of the feud, but IIRC it started when Chip was working for Boyd and Boyd suddenly declared bankruptsy. Chip was working on the Mattel hotwheels car at the time and Mattel had him go into the shop late at night just ahead of the sherrif and remove the car since they could not prove ownership. Chip took the car and the best of Boyd's employees and opened his own shop. As seen with others (Charlie etc) on American Hotrod, Boyd considered this being "unloyal" to him taking this major job and employees away while he was trying to reorganize the company, and has hated Chip ever since. Boyd makes his own bed IMO.

I agree that Boyd puts a lot of work on a few people. Then when the car is gone to the Gabe's he takes them somewhere to do something he calls nice for them. And Foose isn't the only one taking shots at Boyd, the other day on Trucks Stacy David was at the So-Cal Speed Shop and he was saying this is where you want your car done not at some shop with arguing and people not wanting to work and that have an idiot for a boss!! I thought to myself i know he didn't just say that! I like the show and I watch all the new episodes when they come on but I don't like how he pushes people. As far as Mike goes the CNC machining guy I think he brought all of what happened to him on himself by doing work for Foose at Boyd's Shop. Either way i love Overhaulin and American Hot Rod!

As for being on Overhaulin' i read in the application to be on the show that you have to pay all the taxes for the parts and the work that they do! i think that could add up really quickly! I love for him to get a hold of my 77 though!!!!!

Mike really didn't seem to care by that point. He really wanted to be designing new parts and products not being forced to bolt commercial parts on rush jobs every evening and weekend. I still can't believe how Boyd chewed him out when he made Boyd the minature replica of the wheels he designed (I think) for the junkyard dog
Paying the taxes is still a whole lot cheaper than paying for the parts and labor. That's the case on all the game shows etc, the tax collector is there with his hand out when you walk off stage. They can come and get my truck anytime, and I'll do a convincing job of playing the upset owner for a week!

Oh i know that paying just the taxes is way less than paying for all of it and I would love for them to get my truck too. Yea, I noticed on all game shows it says in the credits at the end "All players must meet eligibility requirements to recieve prizes". You ever notice though that all those people who get overhauled are from right there in CA. It would be great to get Foose down here in Louisiana to do something!!! I agree to that Mike was to the point he was fed up and trying to get fired that was why i think he never did to the light bezel for the ugly motorcycle they were building. I'm sorry if anyone liked that motorcycle, i thought that was the ugliest thing i have ever seen!!!!

I have really mixed feelings about all this, I have worked on a lot of high end cars in this business over a long period of time. I've worked for other people and for myself (with a partner) and have never seen the kind of things that go on in these shops. If I had employees like some of the ones on TV, they wouldn't last a week. There isn't enough profit, even in high end cars, to be able to afford to put up with that kind of crap. I have to admit that it has it's entertainment value but it makes the people at the top of the game look ridiculous. Soapbox has been retired, for now.

Boyd is getting a bad reputation versus being know for his show American Hot Rodding. I was pretty upset when I ordered my rims from him. I purchased them through Newstalgia wheels in Tennesse because of the price. (actually beat Boyd Coddington direct). After a little more than 10 weeks, I got my wheels, but the set had two different style center caps on them. Two of them, had the decal on the center placed on crooked. I called Boyd (since he's in CA near me) and he refused to exchange two of the caps for matching ones. He told me I had to go through Newstalgia Wheels to get the replacement caps. Excuse me! he mad the wheels and sent them to Newstalgia. I also needed info about a special socket they use to mount the wheels. They wouldn't give me that info either. Newstalgia Wheel exchanged the caps and there service was nothing short of excellent. I'm thinking about pulling the Boyd decals on the center caps just so I don't advertise his name. I guess he gets whats coming to him. At least his new wife is attractive (have to give him some credit) Who's leaving next?

I'm friends with a local custom car builder and spend some time Saturdays over there shooting the breeze. I watch how he and his crew work and the terrific job they do. They are fairly laid back in attitude, but busy and productive all the time. They are entusiastic about the work and proud of the results.

Everybody there watches Boyd's show. And everybody there is amazed that he finishes anything, much less on those stupid schedules.

I wouldn't work for Boyd or with any one of his crew for 5 minutes. A little respect goes a long way and there doesn't seem to be any on that show. I have found that one well-deserved attaboy goes a long way. Chewing people out (for really stupid stuff) gets them numb and checked out.

Plus there seems to be no organization or planning. You don't give someone free rein to do something then bi*** them out for the way they did it. If you've "built more cars than..." why aren't you out there supervising the way you want it done? Every time he picks up a tool I cringe! He needs to hire a business manager to run the place and be the shop supervisor himself. I just can't see Chip letting someone else run his shop while he plays in his office. I hear old man Tuttle is as big a horsebutt in person as he is on the show.

This new generation of car shows are a blast to watch and ol' Boyd certainly reaps what he sows (in a big way), but all in all I'm kind of agitated with these shows because their popularity has pushed the value up on old vehicles so hight that you can hardly buy a rusted junk for a thousand bucks now....Maybe when all the would-be builders find out what they've gotten into prices will drop down some again. Hot rod cars are especially high, old fat-fender trucks are high, light duty '60's - 70's pickups are getting higher fast, and the bigger old farm trucks and COEs are starting to look good as reasonably expensive alternatives. It'll sure be interesting to see how this all pans out...

(I'll quit the whining now ).

I wonder if people like that ever realize the error in their ways. He deserves everything he gets.
