I'm kinda slow, but I hadn't ever thought that maybe the whole Codington train wreck is scripted out and the clowns on the show are not actually the "real" builders that carry the shop. It sure is rather odd that everyone that quits Boyd shows up next month on Foose's show. It's totally beyond me why Boyd would let this crap go out on the air...I'd never buy (like I could) a rod from Boyd given all the BS and rushing and panic that you see on the show...he must be getting paid $$ from the ol' cable guys...
Boyd's not as popular as most may think. At the last Barrett-Jackson auction, the all aluminum car they build sold for a pathetic $150,000. I'll bet it cost double to build it. Overhaulin' is a better show, but I dont care how the butcher some real classics. I beleive one guy just wanted the car restored and they cut up the engine bay to fit big block...dont remeber which car it was, but it was kinda painful to watch. I too have grown tired of the whole "stolen car" routine.

EDIT: Did anyone catch the Boyd episode where Charlie left? The way Boyd's wife was crying in a private office with Charlier makes ya think he was nailing her on the side...He did live with Boyd for some time. How's that for made for TV!
i think there is too many darn so called "makeover" shows, being it a car, truck, or home.
Thank goodness for the National Geographic, Science and History channels.
I haven't watched Boyd and his crew or Paul Sr. and his clowns for a long time now.
Yeah I saw the episode where Charley left, it was quite surprising to me at least. How could Boyd insult Charley like that, he is one of the best in the business. Then as said before I have seen Mike a few times on Overhaulin', so we can bet our bottom dollar that he is gone from Boyd's. Has anyone seen the new American Hot Rods where Mike is the project manager for the replica racer. I wonder if this is where Mike either quits or gets fired. I always said Chip and Boyd had there creative differences. Chip is creative and Boyd is different.
Overhaulin' pranks are getting old... more car less host garbage!
Charlie was the most talented and down to earth guy there. He just got tired of having to do rushed crap work that was below his standards. I know exactly how he feels.
I agree with you stryder Boyd's wife was a little too upset! My wife and i were watching and both of us said the same thing. I think some of the show may be the cable people telling them what to do but i feel for the most part it is real. And I have thought about the unrealistic deadlines for the the show too, because in the newer episodes you can see the cars that they have worked so hard on because of a deadline just sitting in the background done. I don't know if maybe he stores them there or what. But the other day we were watching and the old Red Corvette that they had so much trouble with was sitting right there in the background. and the yellow mustang they built for the guy off of Barrett-Jackson car search (his wifes car) was sitting right there by the door, and that guy lives in dallas IIRC. But i still watch it cause i like to see the cars. Overhaulin' is still my favorite. I watch pimp my ride just to see what they will do the cars and because X-hibit is so freakin funny when he picks up the car and when they show the finished car. But they do some crazy stuff like putting a dog washer in the back of a van, or a sink in the car, or a pool table in the bed of the truck. i have to say one that i thought was very cool but very impractical was when the put alot of TVs and Speakers in the bed of a Chevy and made it tilt up like a dump bed. Very interesting but not very pratical in a daily driver.
I watch Overhaulin' and like it. That Courtney was nice but kind of a poser and I think the producer's wife looks better, on the newer ones. Courtney supposedly was the real deal tho, a car nut, but she came across as a real ditz the way they editted her. Eye candy is eye candy, if that's all they want her to do,the new one is better at that.
The 22's on that last Mustang gave it kind of a cartoon look and I liked it, way better that the prostock centerlines the guy had on it originally. The one strike I have against Overhaulin' is that they do these cars for guys like Lance Armstrong, who could pay for the work out of loose pocket change. Sheryl Crow probably snorts up in cocaine in a week what it would have cost to do that car, why not do some kid's car who can't afford tires instead? And it would be nice if they'd do one OUTSIDE of the greater LA area once in a while.
Boyd seems to be kind of useless, as well as losing all his good guys to Foose, he doesn't seem to know anything or design anything at all himself.. what is he good for?

Boyd is a scatter-brain, a poor manager, and a lousy mentor. He's always over-promising, and under-delivering...to make up for it, he drives his most valued workers into the ground. I worked for someone like that once, I know the type.
It's no surprise his best people are leaving, I would. There's nothing worse than working 16+ hours a day, 7 days a week and getting no appreciation for it.
Chip on the other hand, is talented, level-headed and a lot more personable. It certainly shows in the whole attitude of the team there.

I seen and spoken with Chip Foose on several occasion at various street rod shows. The guy is down to Earth and extremely talented. Boyd can't come close to him. I asked Chip how he felt about "stealing" Boyd's painter. Chip told me that the painter has been inquiring about being hired with Chip Foose for several years prior to the show. Chip finally broke down and hired him on. The painter just got tired of all the long nights and weekends away from his family. Can't blame him. I think Mike did the same thing. I'm all for Chip Foose. That's business, something Boyd needs to learn. I don't think Boyd is hurting for $$. I've seen what some of his vehicles go for. He's just going to be loosing some great people. I really don't think the show is acting. The guys on the show, don't have acting experience and it would be real noticable. I think they all have a lot of respect for each other and pull together to get things done. Its odd, they haven't had any new episodes since Mike left?????
The people who pay for these cars have more money than brains. You see these creations at Barrett-Jackson in a few years with Boyd standing there with a big "s--t eating grin on his face taking the glory for these speciality cars even thou he never touched during construction.
I believe all that is for show just like the "bike builders". All of them here in So Cal have open houses with free food and stuff and occaisionally I go to them. SoCal Speed has opened there place to all arround father day and also to the Bonneville 200MPH Club for their Summer get together: both of these are appreciated. It's a chance to see what I can't afford..
Most of the shops here do good things for the community, sponsoring youth teams etc. I'm sure this happens all over the country...
This style of "reality TV" will go the course and soon be over and a memory but not before the NY OC guys get coupe of new motor homes and a Hummer or too.....
Boyd is jerk, no doubt about that, but Duane is even bigger jerk. What is his job? To walk around, yell at people, and keep saying "We'll never finish this project on time." Hellllllo, do some work and maybe you will finish project on time.
By the way, was American Hot Rod canceled or something? It wasn't on last Friday.

You are soooo right. I often pop open a bottle of Château Lafite from the cellar, put some Chopin in the sound system and enjoy a special on the migratory birds of the Amazon.
Just kidding, I enjoy watching craftmanship but am turned off by all the attached crap.

I watch the show for some reason thinking I might learn something. But what ive learned is that, in my humble opinion, Boyd ruins classic cars that are becoming fewer and fewer. Taking a classic 59 Impala, paying 21gs for it then chopping it up when it was in pristine condition. And what is with lowereing everything to the ground. He creates a lot of controversy himself by overworking his guys and agreeing to ridiculous timelines and his brownosing shop super, Dwain(something like that) makes things worse. I dont think he has much talent other than being a yes man.
They also seem to always want to put a new HIPO engine and tranny in the vehicle that never seems to want to start. Why not restore the original?
Hell he may pay well but if you enjoy that kind of work, but have to do it under those conditions constantly, Id want to walk out too. Its a car not life and death decisions.
