I'm wondering if all of this fuss is really "real". I don't watch television... there is not enough watchable tv that is worth spending my hard earned teacher's pay on. So I don't have first hand knowledge of this "auto opera" stuff.
I grew up around NBC-TV in New York, produced marketing spots as an aerospace engineer, have an ancillary teaching role with the local theater, and teach a theater arts section in an elementary school.
Equipped with these questionable "credentials" and being a born NYC cynic... makes me wonder how much of this "drama" is "made for TV". It does sound like alot of fun to watch... but not enough fun to warrant a set and cable bills.
Am I really missing something or is this Boyd guy trying to keep his enterprise afloat with a "hard hitting" TV show?... as it is likely his custom car stuff may be suffering from poor management.
I may not be able to watch, but I do follow this stuff cause it is fun. I'm enjoying the post... keep us informed.
I expect some is put on thick for the cameras, but the guys that got fired or quit really did, and they seemed to be telling it like it is before they left. Boyd's obviously fell due to mismangement once before and I wonder if these deadline pushes are due to needing the cash flow for the bills, Diane has complained several times that she doesn't have the money to pay a bill, and some suppliers would only ship with advance payment, altho I heard he got $1 Mill/season from Discovery.
He throws money around like water like shipping the woody to HI by air to get it there in time for a show when the build ran late, then flying the whole crew to the show for the unveiling.
I'd bet he doesn't pay overtime for all those extra "volunteered" hours.
Is one of the guys that left the guy with the messed up face?
I kinda got turned off Boyd when he built a retro-rod in a race with the crew (I think blue-bear left in that episode). There was a 2 part competition. Race from CA to the east coast, and a spectator judging. Boyd's car was put together with many newer components (chevy 350, FI, electronic ignition), the crews car was all vintage with a flat head, strombergs, magneto etc. The crew car broke down a couple of times and lost in the last leg. Then during the show, Boyd's loud-mouth wife started bad mouthing the crew's car to the public. Really bad character IMNSHO.
Yep, Mike got fired when someone ratted to Dewayne that he was designing motorcyclewheels for Foose on the side. Boyd made a big deal about how he was stealing from him because he found some work on Mike's computer hard drive. Where else would he have the sophisticated cad-cam software needed to design with, he never proved Mike didn't create the actual drawings on his own time, in which case all he "stole" was some electricity and CPU cycles. It was fine tho when Mike was forced to give up weekend plans time and time again to work on a deadline car.
It's a TV show, people. Scripted, plotted, shot and reshot with a camera crew, sound technicians, ect. I am sure that Boyd Coddington is not the total idiot he appears as on the show since his business appears to be successful. Can you really picture him calling out, " I'm going to fire Mike. It's going to tear me up. Bring in the camera crew". I doubt that his skilled employees take substantial abuse from Dwayne or any one else except when paid to do so for the camara. I enjoy OVERHAULIN much more because I get to see more craftmanship and less phoney drama.
Dono
I would like the show if there was more technical info. Gotta say the crew working at Coddington's shop often look like a rehab group or a second chance program. Not to insult rehab groups that is.
I'd work for Chip, but I'd NEVER work for Boyd. Why do his guys put up with that? I'd like to tell you what I think of Boyd as a human being, but FTE standards won't let me use language like that.
I have a budie who worked for Boyd many years ago.. And what he tells me its all about the money.. One thing Boyd is good on is what he pays his staff.. But otherwise he a A$$&*%^ to work for..
Yep, lot of theatrics on Boyds show, with them making those unrealistic deadlines to add drama. I like Overhaul, have a great respect for that many skilled people being able to work together that close, so fast, yet get a project done so well. I do tire of the stealem'and trickem' routine tho. Like is stressful enough without all that crap. ..
Now take PIMP MY RIDE, thats my favorite. Take a kid with no money that really needs a slick ride . All those pimper guys laugh at the junk when x drives or pulls it in to the shop, then they all get together and turn out a sweet ride. I love to see those kids reaction when they first see their newly "pimped" ride. Kinda gives me a fuzzy,
Call me old fashioned but 22s do not belong on a classic car. Other than that I like most of Chip's designs. I also like the fact that he knows how to do what he asks his people to do, bodywork, pinstriping, paint.
I get the impression that Boyd forgot what it's like to work.
Hey does anybody know what happened to cute girl that used to be on overhaulin, I think her name was Courtney. She had a lot more personality than the new chick.
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh. . . . don't tell anybody. Roy is the next to go from Boyd's. He looks like he can't tolerate the bovine scatology any longer. He's gonna go to that bar that they featured on one of the episodes, and drink beer and 'Moon' the freight trains.
I think Mikey from OCC will become Boyd's chief designer. He won't take too much abuse from Daddy Tuttle much longer. Paulie is going to run off with Boyd's first wife. Duane will resign and go to work for OCC.
Jay Leno will purchase Ford, Chevy, and D/Chrysler.
O.K. Enough for the soap opera - "As the Stomach Turns."
