My buddy's grandfather has a 1928 or 1929 Model T. It's in original condition, drives it quite often too. The cool thing about it, is that it's not in 100% absolute perfect condition, it's in the condition it should be in...used. It's restored but you can tell he uses it and enjoys it. I love to see that.

I don't know... I'm embarrassed -but not too big- to admit I kind of like the drama of OCC and Boyd's, and to a lesser extent, Monster Garage.
I don't watch a lot of TV, even less of it dramatic, and I've always kind of hated "reality" tv, but there's something kind of appealing about those Discovery shows.
My favorites, however, are the Spike shows on Saturday morning (especially Jessi on Xtreme 4x4) and Overhaulin'. I'd much rather watch the craftsmanship of those people than the fakey drama of the other shows.
I don't particularly care for the drama. I watched OCC at first but got bored of the same old thing all the time. I liked to watch the bikes being made, but its not technical enough and I lost interest.
The monster garage show is pretty cool, but it's loosing it's interest with me too.
I hardly catch hot rod, I don't keep up with it and I'll watch it if it happens to be on.
I like overhaulin', thats a decent show.
I used to like horsepower TV, but I can't stand that new kid they have on the show and I stopped watching that awhile ago. I like Trucks! and Extreme 4x4, those shows are good. I see some of the reruns of Trucks! when they had that guy Mel Fair on the show. I'm glad they got rid of him. Stacy does a great job and I liked the direction they went with the show. I like how those two shows are more realistic and easy going. They leave some of the add-lib in and I like that. The older Trucks! shows were nothing more then detailed advertisements and it wasn't as interesting.
Now they're a little more into the how-to aspect of things.
Don't think that the shows on Spike (and to an extent, Overhaulin') aren't totally driven by ad $$$, because they are. A quote from the RTM Productions (producers of the Spike Powerblock shows) website:
"From cams to lubricants, exhaust systems to seat covers, the producers of Powerblock TV can tailor show content to benefit your bottom line! The power of the Internet through PowerblockTV.com can work in tandem by driving television viewers directly to your web site!"
Of coarse, their show is driven by the parts they get, it's all 1 big advertisement...
But my point was that Trucks! and Extreme 4x4 are less obvious. Trucks! used to be much more annoying in that respect, observe the format and style of an old episode vs todays episodes. Their show format/style has changed over the years and I enjoy it much more. The new Extreme 4x4 show has the same characteristics that the newer Trucks! episodes now go by.
FWIW, I'm a business administration student that works for a marketing company, I watch this stuff closely by habit
The magazines are the same way all the tech articles are about how to install advertiser's parts.
I like to watch Biker Buildoff and Southern Iron because even tho they are building bikes they show them actually doing the work mistakes and all, Not just tacking stuff together and sending it off to someone else to finish. OCC couldn't metal finish or paint if their life depended on it.
As most of us do ... we watch these shows for both entertainment and hoping to learn something that might help us with our neverending projects..
I watch all mentioned shows... and like them all for their own unique reasons..
Although no one mentioned(at least I didnt see it) CCR(Cut Chop Rebuild).... Season 1 was kinda a fly by night look at what we did type show... not a whole lot of usefull knoledge to be had... But they must have gotten alot of input about how poor the show was and for season 2 they actually go into detail about what it is they are doing to each project vechile. Ive actually picked up a few things from watching the show..
And that is a bonus... Trucks and extreme 4x4 are my favorites ..... but all the shows bring something else to the table.. wether it be pure laughs... or huh... I learned somthing...
Talking about "useful knowledge", there really isn't much to be gained from American Hot Rod. Sure, it's entertaining, but I don't learn anything from it. That time when Blue Bear bent his wrench, Boyd thought that was the neatest thing in the world. Heck, people do that kind of thing every day. I just watch the show now to see who's going to quit or get fired.
One thing I did learn, I can do just as good work as they do. That gave me a lot of confidence to tackle work I might have avoided otherwise thinking it was much too difficult.
Although no one mentioned(at least I didnt see it) CCR(Cut Chop Rebuild).... ect ect
Ah right, I forgot about that, The first season i thought had add. They would skip from one car to the next and i would never know what was happening. This new season really is pretty good as you said.
