Need Help Fast

I'm putting Warn hubs in my 2000 F-250. I got the hub and lock ring in, now i'm trying to put in the axle retaining ring. My question is do i even need axle retaining ring. I cant see a groove on spline to put it in. There is 1 axle ring behind hub assembly thats why I'm wondering if i even need it? Also it said I may need to use a crowbar or something to pry on knuckle (u-joints) to expose ring groove, I had no luck at that either. Any sugg? Thanks in advance

I didn't think it was any different than my 99. Maybe it is! I just put the mechanism in Put the big ring in and the chrome cover and that was it.

Thx for reply. Thats what I'm thinking too but why did they give me the axle ring and in instructions it says it goes on. Wish they were still open. Thanks for your help.

Hey Mac, I'll try to help but you've got me a little confused, I just rebuilt my front axle on my superduty a couple of weeks ago so here it goes: axle +U-Joint+spindle with inner dust seal and knuckle seal slide through the knuckle into the differential, knuckle seal is driven into knuckle with the axle assembly. Spacer washer smooth on one side with groves on the other side is then installed with grooves facing inboard against knuckle seal, wheel bearing assembly goes on next, then three washers two metal and one is hexagon-hexagon washer is sandwhiched between two metal washers and the three are installed - then comes the axle retaining clip (hognose pliers needed), may have to pry the axle out slightly via u-joint to expose groove to seat the clip, finally the hub and then the hub retaining ring which you can squeeze by hand. Now where I am confused is if you only pulled the 4x4 hub off then you only have to replace the hub and hub retaining ring, you would only need an axle retaining ring if you disassembled down to the wheel bearing and removed the three washers etc.. Hope this helps,
Kev

99f350sd is probably right, the hub probably is applicable to diffrent makes & models that may require the clip, but yours dosn't

Ahhh just got done. Drove it and all seems good. I just disregarded the stinkin axle ring and slaped her together. Made me feel good to see your replies after that. Thank you all. I appreciate the quick help.
Oh btw did anyone else have trouble getting that big spiral ring threaded around the hub? I about warped and bent the 1st one but I salvaged it in there, not to mention my fingernail gettin ripped half off...Ouch. But I feel good now that all is fixed. Thanks all once again!

no its really easy it just goes in a certain way. did you bend a tab on one end?
You start the unbent end in kinda holding the slinky open a little and feed it around.

There is a c-clip behind the hub assembly, but none after the hub is installed.

I just did this.

The Warn hub that works in the '99-up SD's is a Dana 44 type, that can also be used all the way back to the late 70's apparently.
