I've had a problem with my non-ESOF hubs sticking lately. I finally got my stock hubs out today with a lot of pulling, banging, and swearing. The inside of the hub was pretty clean, not the jungle I was expecting. I sprayed some WD-40 into the hub lock, and cycled it a few times and it felt just fine. It would lock, and unlock like it's supposed to. I slid the hub lock back into the hub, and put the retaining ring back on. I knew something wasn't right because the ring would keep popping out, and the ends of the ring looked too close together, like the ring was still compressed. I must have tried for 45 minutes to get the ring into the groove in the hub. I ended up putting the ring on the hub lock, sliding it halfway into the hub, and then whacking it with a rubber mallet! It did the trick, the hub lock finally got seated deep enough, but it looks as it the retainer ring is jammed into the lock, and now, I can't get the friggin' thing out!! Has this happened to anyone else?
I have had mine originally stuck in there. But the original probme, they would not engage. Could be a bad wheel bearing. If that get out of paralell with the front axle shift coming into the front wheel assembly, it will not engage, because of the pressure. Try jacking up the front end and try it, if it mmoves freely, mostly likly a front wheel bearing. Try moving the wheel side to side and up and down. If it moves both ways with the same play probably a wheel beaing, about 175 at the parts store, fully sealed unit. If it is the wheel bearing, do not start taring it apart until you get the new one. On my buddies B3000, is has fully sealed front wheel bearings. It cam with everything, just take couple bolts off and replace the whole assembly, really nice, kinda hard on the checkbook though.
how much for the premiums? driverfx lists them for about $200 shipping inc., why premiums over standard? curious cuz i'm thinkin about changing mine, thanks
actually i've been leaning toward prem cuz they're all metal. i'm not a big fan of plastic truck parts. but "premium", "heavy duty", "standard", they're just words. my "standard" v-10 and "standard" 4r100 have been holding up just fine.
also, they show a part number, so i'm guessing there are standards available, #11690

Sounds like your bearings are shot. At the least you should pull them out and check the needle bearing and axle area. And throw away the stock hubs....They do make standards for the SD..I like the prems though.
99f350sd, I think you're right about my bearings! I finally got the stuck hub off, I used an old strap type oil filter wrench around the hub body, and pulled like crazy! The retaining ring had somehow slipped into the groove that the O-ring rests on, weird to say the least. No apparent damage to the hub, or hub lock, which is a very good thing!
I noticed that the thrust washer (I think thats what it's called, the snap ring, with hex looking washer that holds the stub shaft in?), does not spin when I spin the tire on the drivers side, but spins like a merry-go-round on the pass. side! There is no front to back play in the washer on the pass. side, it just spins! Is the washer supposed to spin?!?
