OK, What's going on here? I have 10K miles on my '05 SuperDuty, at the first oil change i had to put in a gallon of coolant, i thought hmmmmmm... maybe just a factory thing, but at the second oil change it was down a 1 1/2 gallons, and there is a noticeable spray around the coolant bottle and the underside of the hood. can't tell if it's coming from the cap on the coolant bottle, or hose. It must be happening at highway speeds because i've never seen it actually wet.
The engine has never been hot and it's not in the oil. Anybody seen this?
I'm gonna take it in, so in preparation i have re-connected the egr. and i replaced the diablo 65hp with the factory. I tried the method of setting the factory method twice without starting. (read that thread), but i must have read it wrong. once i replaced the original backup, the diablo wouldn't let me replace the factory again.

Reason: added question
my 05sd started blowing coolant the first time i towed with it figured it was overfilled so i topped it off. just go back from 3000 mile trip pulling trailer had to put at least 1 gallon in every day for two weeks dropping off at dealer today so they can look at tomorrow
This is why I sold my Predator. It would not puke coolant from the
bottle in the tow mode, but it would in the 65 hp mode. I have not
had any more "pukin" since returning to stock.
Well, this is one that Ford ain't helping much with it seems. After four model years of engine builds this is the item they turn their back on completely. IMO.
Even though many are with programmers, I personally know of many without programmers blowing under tow / haul conditions. Not necessarily in the tow / haul setting.
Their answer is to have the techs check for degas cap pressure and replace as necessary. I've had two replaced when taken in for recall notices on other items. Or lately, they jump straight to the head gaskets.
I have found that running the coolant at min. level has helped quite a bit...I never run hot.
If you are replacing coolant be sure and use whatever it is that Ford says to use. Although, I may go to Evans at some point in time...due to info I have read here.
OK, I took it in for service. the tech told me that their general concensus was that i was overfilling the resevoir. I told him that i have never seen ANY fluid in the resevoir. So we decided he would clean off the coolant, fill it for me, and let me drive it. Drove to work today, and popped the hood to find coolant all over the engine, and under the hood again. it's going back tonight.
I haven't tried this without running the 65HP mode. I'm getting the idea from the feedback that this happens alot???? I'd hate to think i bought the predator and can't use it.
Took my 04' in it was blowing coolant with the diablo 100hp took it in and tech said that it was gaskets and they were replaced and have not had any issues since and that was aobut 3 months ago.
Has nothing to do with chips or coolant caps ... I never run chips and 3 caps have been replaced ...
It is a head bolt and gasket problem ....
the heads "bounce" under pressure .... mine has done this under load going up hill or using Tow/Haul down hill ...
my Tech says Ford is working on a fix ...both bolts and gaskets ....
since the International 6.0s are not doing this , I blame Ford ... Ford would not take the International engine "package" ...only the hardware and then Ford did their own electronics ... the Ford 6.0 is around 100HP more than the Intenational engine ...so Ford already chipped the 6.0 100hp straight from the factory ...
I dont need a "hot rod" ... at 15,000 miles pe month i need longevity , dependability and fuel mileage ...3 things Ford overlooked with the 6.0 in my opinion ... I want the 6.0 offered in the F650 line ....
I had the same problem on my '04 6.0 at about 5k miles going up a hill, full loaded (but not towing). I came to this website (of course) and read horror stories of what people had been thru. My local dealer found a coolant hose that had become disconnected under the coolant overflow, so it looked like fluid was coming from there, but that was not actually the case. The dealer replaced the clamps @ both ends of this hose & no problems since. I am not running a chip on my truck (yet)...
I'm not suggesting your solution is as simple as mine, but one can only hope.
Good luck
Ford did release a statement to the technicians that a new head gasket is coming to fix this concern. Details to come as they are finalized and officially released. And for the record, while the current gaskets are barely holding at their limit with a stock engine and do fail on their own, tuners are DEFINITELY causing problems with the 6.0L. I would know.
i have a 04 cc psd mine also blows coolant.my mechanic said unplug your egr.so i did and it stopped blowing coolant even with the diablo plugged in.
I have seen / heard where a # of techs are saying this...unoffically of course.
Most, however, say to leave it intact. If for no other reason to keep the failures in front of Ford so they will (maybe) place a priority on fixing. In other words by-passing the problem does not cure the problem.
As we all know...I choose to by-pass the problem since Ford has no inclination to pay me for R & D.
took my o5sd in on sunday got a cll yesterday they could not find any problem with my truck for puking coolant after a lenghty conversation with advisor and them calling ford tech assistant they called me today to say they werw going to replace head gaskets per ford. then the bad news informed me they have 6 other trucks ahead of mine for same problem will wait to see how long it takes
Mine is at the dealer right now for the same problem. They replaced the head gaskets and the EGR cooler. It still has a rough running condition in the morning so they are going to start replacing injectors. It seems as if the head gaskets and transmissions, from what I hear, are Ford's achilies(?) tendon.
.... I tried the method of setting the factory method twice without starting. (read that thread), but i must have read it wrong. once i replaced the original backup, the diablo wouldn't let me replace the factory again.
Glafond, I can't find this post - can you put in a link to it??? I"m getting a new Diablo next week and I"m brushing up on all info I can...
My 2003 stock 6.0L Crew Cab is at Ford right now with all the same symptoms. I was having ruff starts until my last visit when they replaced 6 of the 8 injectors. Now it starts way better but I still have a problem when accelerating up hills and it seems like a few of the injectors cut in and out causing intermittent loss of power. Today’s visit was to hopefully cure that and to address the mass loss of coolant when the truck is under any load. The truck was dropped off at 8am and its now 2:50pm and there still diagnostics on it. I will let you know how things go.
