From a diagnostics standpoint, replacing the head gaskets without replacing the EGR cooler is worthless. There is no real way of distinguishing one problem from the other- they both display the exact same symptoms- Coolant system pressurization under high load, exhaust gasses present in degas bottle, and potential overheating under load. The only way to know for sure is if you are getting water in the exhaust, it is definately the cooler- however, this only happens about 25% of the time when a cooler fails.
OK, I got my truck back. WOW, what a difference. my mileage has increased by 2 mpg, and the extra power is obvious.
i can't believe it took so long to convince the dealer that i (and you guys) were right.
this is what was on my service invoice:
TSB:05-17-13 HOTLINE REPORT:5HYCI003
Perform cooling system pressure test. Perform external head gasket leak test.
Replace RT and LFT head gaskets due to blown gaskets pressurizing cooling system.
Necessary to EVAC and charge A/C. Truck has 2 alternators, test drive 12 miles.
Inspect for leaks. OK

So far everything is good. Diablo Predator is back in @65hp, EGR plug fell back out.
mileage is good. but, 15,000 miles and the Contis are shot... what junk tires!
won't even make it through my first winter on the original tires. is that ridiculous?
I took my '05 in yesterday to try to find why it overheats when towing a fairly heavy load. It never gets into the red, but climbs right to the top of the gauge. I have some coolant residue under the hood, but have never had to add any to the degas bottle. I know I don't have any coolant or water in the oil (recent Blackstone test) but at 15,000 miles I am still finding way too much "break-in" metals in the oil. My lead, molybdenum and potassium levels are way too high. What really bothers me about this heat problem is that when I tow the same load with my '03 (65,000 mi) it never moves the temp guage at all.
Don't know if this is for you but, thought you might be interested. Temperature Gauge Reads Hot, 05 F-Series:
Some trucks built before 12-10-04 may have a temp gauge reading at the top of the green normal band or into the red hot band, with normal coolant temperatures. If no overheat condition is present, the instrument cluster should be replaced. If there is a code in the engine computer for ECT over 240 degrees, or if coolant is being expelled from the degas bottle, do not replace the cluster. Diagnose the overheat condition.
TSB 05-1-2
Your problem sounds a lot like mine. residue under the hood, gets hot when i tow. my degas bottle always had fluid in it, but when i added fluid, i could add at least a gallon, sometimes two. the coolant doesn't get into the oil, it just vaporizes under the hood.
glaford, sounds like my problem too, I took it in Monday and they have yet to even look at it. I also told them to install a 3 guage pod and a 4" stainless exhaust while they had it. I wanted to get them to do it since that will keep my warranty spotless for when the bearings go south(like I think they are going to do, based no my oil test reports).
How much did the invoice say that was? Even though it was warranty, they still would have printed the cost??
I ask because I'm going to have to do it, and pay for it. No way am I going to get past the Ford Inspector with my truck, just too much damn aftermarket. The service guy and Ford Tech ask if I can get it back to stock and bring it back, but their is just too much to fix.
Currently the truck runs fine in "stock" form, just can't tow or get on it at all. My pukeing was of the classic discription, a progressive puke from just a small hickup and over a period of six months developed into a full blown dripping from the shocks and running down the sides of my truck. Even with running the reservor low level, and trying all the "fixes"
Yes I have the Predator, and wish I haven't touched it!
I will just continue to drive it the way it is, If I see on this board that a new and improved gasket is out I will go ahead and do it then.

See my post today-my truck was doing the same thing. Ford dealer found casting sand was clogging the oil cooler causing oil temp to spike. They are replacing the oil cooler, EGR cooler, radiator, degas bottle and several sensors and then doing the latest reflash.
Anyone know for sure if the new / updated head gasket and bolts are available from Ford? My truck has started puking coolant from the bottle AND has what looks like black metal pieces in the oil (I have a thread here on that). Both have started in the last 2k miles, wonder if they could be related?
MRKnight,
the service rep told me the "Kit" had come in for my truck to replace the head gaskets. don't know if that means it's available to slugs like us.
it seems to have solved the puking coolant issue ( I REALLY put it to the test!!)
