need more performance

i have a 1990 f-150 4x4 302 5 speed. and i would like to get a little more power out of it. is there and kind of chip that will help. i was thinkin of a k and n filter but would that give noticible power.

one more thing is there bushings i can replace in the shifter to make the shifting smother and faster. or maybe even a short throw shifter

thanks matt

I think what you really need to determine is what KIND of performance you're looking for. Are you looking to pull trailers better? Better off-roading? Quicker acceleration? Higher top speed? For the last two, get a car. (I'm kidding, but it's still a truck remember). A K&N filter in and of itself won't do much for you. I think most guys would tell you if you're looking for speed and acceleration is to open up your exhaust, as in a performance catalytic converter and Flowmaster muffler or something like that. Other than that, the big question is, what's your budget?

just a note, no one add on is going to give that "seat of the pants" performance gains, just get an idea of where you want to go and start,like jrohel said with exhaust, if funds are tight go cat back, then add headers and cat, then put an open air filter,then beef ignition up, with all of it together is when you'll really see the gains, the 15 or so horses that k&n advertises isn't something that you gonna just pop in and notice. And if you go with a chip make sure you know all about it, i've seen some fried ecm's from just chips.

Power = Money

The K&N itself wont give you much noticeable power.

B&M makes a short throw shifter for the transmission you have, its an M5OD.

Try a search for "performance upgrades" or criteria like that, there are many threads on upgrades.

Personally for a shifter, i'd go with a hurst competition shifter. If you still have a stock shifter, then it will be a shorter throw to go with the hurst, idk much about b&m, but i like the hurst alot better.

If you want to go totally custom...get a woodgrain pistol grip shifter and custom fab it. Yeah it isn't a mopar, but it will be pretty sweet. I might end up doing something like that.

Now that you mentioned it, maybe it was just Hurst that made the shifter for the M5? I forget, now I am not sure if B&M makes one, it might just be Hurst I was thinking of.
