LiteOn SOHW-1693S drive...

have any of you had any trouble with this drive?

I built a pc for a friend... and for some reason, I can't get this thing to work. It seems as if it's having a problem being compatable with the system. The system is as follows (well, as close as I can remember, I built it back in March):
AMD3200 64-bit processor (which I suspect may be the culprit)
Gigabyte N-force board (I forget exactly which model)
512 DDR400 Kingston
80 Gig. Maxtor hd.
and the SOHW-1693S.

Here's what happens... anytime I put a cd of anykind in it, the pc will lock up (or atleast slow way-down). When I insert a dvd and start the player, it will show about the first 5-10 seconds of the disc (whether that's the previews, opening scene of the movie or the "Paramont" stars... what-ever) then it shuts down the dvd software.

So, I thought... maybe it's a bad drive. I pulled SOHW-1693S (that I know works) out of my system, and swapped it in... same thing. So, I'm thinking this is a 64-bit processor problem... because, I next tried his drive in my pc... works just fine.

My pc:
2500+Barton AMD
Gigabyte MB (not N-force... hmm... forget exactly which chipset it is though)
Maxtor 20G hd.
512MB DDR400 Kingston

Anyways, help would be much appreciated... this thing has been collecting dust in my bedroom for months now.

How is the drive installed. Primary IDE or secondary. Master or slave. What are the settings for the IDE channel. PIO or ultra DMA. Same question goes for the BIOS. Check your system compared to his. It is obviously not the drive. Has to be something in the setup of his computer.

DO NOT put it on the same cable as the HDD... THat will cause problems for sure.. A DVD drive needs to be set to DMA mode, and it sounds like your bios is set to PIO mode. Did you purchase and install the 64bit copy of XP? That could be the culprit as well.

sounds like pfogle and jake00 is on to something or driver wasn't compatable or system doesn't recognise it.

I believe it is a 64bit version of XP Pro... all I know is that my version of XP Pro wouldn't allow the pc to even run past POST.

Tried the updated drivers... nothing.

The drive is on it's own cable, running master off of what I would assume would be the primary slot. There is a slot 1 (HDD), 2 (DVD) 3/4 (which are further down the board).

The system will run just fine if you don't attempt to run a cd/dvd. Solitare, etc... it all works fine.

it could be a driver error with 64 bit... this would make alot of sense as hardly noone makes 64 drivers yet
