this is not true... my amd 64 runs cooler overclocks then any of my 32bit xp's ever did... and hp offers amd 63 bit processors in laptops now and i LOVE mine, its so friggin fast... as for my pc... i have an amd 3000+ 64 in it overclocked to a 4000+ and its water cooled... it runs at 48 degrees just fine.. i havnt met a pc that has outbenched it yet... and im still waiting on drivers for it for 64 windows..
Matt
Sorry, simple physics. The more voltage applied - the faster the clock cycle - the greater the heat, period. There is NO way around this fact. Higher speed = more heat and as I've stated the average home (or laptop) user is not going to go to water cooling like people like you and I do. Let's see you take that overclocked AMD of yours, put it in a Dell manufactured case and air cool it. Think it won't run hot then?
Vista looks like a prettied-up version of XP. It took me long enough to get XP all tweaked to just how I like it: all the little animations, yellow popup balloons, candy land colors, etc. all gone, and everything's just plain and how I'm used to it. No little prompts and wizards, everything's in my control. I'm not about to switch over to something new just because Microsoft releases it. I'm perfectly satisfied with XP.
ok, then why does my work hp with an amd 64+ run just fine around 45 degrees.... its been proven that the newer cpus have lower cpu temps and reason is that they have more surface area... have u not done any research?
and to answer your questions, im dell certified and i work on them all day long, we have p3's that are still running just fine.. we prolly add 100 new computers every year and have some old *** pc's that still work fine..
".... its been proven that the newer cpus have lower cpu temps and reason is that they have more surface area... have u not done any research?"
Proven by whom? Have I done my research? Let's just say I have VERY good insight into the CPU world from where I sit every day. Look at CPU dies over the years, they don't get bigger they get smaller! Heat sinks get bigger as CPU dies get smaller. The heat that needs to be dispersed by the ever decreasing CPU die gets exponentially greater as the surface area decreases. Bottom line, heat can't disappear, it can only be transfered from one place to another. If 150 degrees is radiating off of a 1x1 cm flat square, it is much harder to use a heat sink to cool it then if the same temperature were coming off of a 2x2 cm flat square. This is [loosely] because the heat is concentrated into a space half the size on a 1x1 cm die. They reasons your HP is running at 45c are:
Larger heat sinks and faster fans in use to move the heat from the small CPU die to the surrounding air, then outside the case
Technology like Speedstep, where the CPU lowers its own speed when at idle. Lowered speed means reduced heat.
The problem is that heat sinks can only get so large before the cases have to get bigger and fans can only move so much air before they become too noisy for the average consumer. I know a lot of about thermodynamics, I am surrounded by it daily.
Well, I have to agree, all Microsoft does is brainwash you, then if that don't work they force you into buying another junk OS when they are kinda getting to bugs worked out of the last one. XP is still a joke but I have to use it because they ended support for NT 4. If they keep putting out crap I'm going back to Red Hat or MAC. But if Apple comes out with an Intel chip I guess I'm stuck with Linux.
"XP is still a joke but I have to use it because they ended support for NT 4."
I hear LINUX users say this a lot, but I never hear a real basis behind it. I for one realize that is is possible to like both LINUX and XP. For those of you claiming XP "is a joke" or "a terrible operating system" I'd be genuinely interested in your reasons behind it. For example I can make the broad statement that Chevy vehicles suck even though the 1991 Cavalier is the only Chevy I've ever REALLY had a problem with. Are a lot of this type of statement a generalization of this type against M$?
BTW, from today's perspective NT 4 sucks, anyone who is willingly still using it needs their head examined.
well, i dont think that xp sucks to bad, except for that in my own oppinion, its a resource hog. i like my mandrake linux, and will fully transfer over to it after i feel that it supports my hardware fully. right now im trying to find out the vmware, and once i get it goin i will be using xp less and less, mainly just for runnin winblows based programs, untill all my software can be attained in 'nix forms, then ill probably wipe out windows and put a second nix os.

I like my operating systems simple without alot of wizards to hold my hand(I like to have more control of the operating system) I do not like the cosmetics. The silly dog jumping around does not improve my file searches. If you want real administrative tools you have to get xp pro, xp home version does not cut the mustard. I do use linux but I am primarily a win2k user. Win2k is a resource hog but nothing like xp. Xp is fine if you like it, but I tried it and went back to win2k.
I cannot physically keep XP running for more then a week. (maybe not the best way of putting it but... I have reinstalled it about 100 times since march. Every time i get it updated it crashes so its either W2k or NT4. I haven't even seen W2K since the disc exploded in my CD Rom. I might try XP again when i get a new system though. As for home edition, I have no use for it. Pro is the only way to go for XP.
Lets see... XP is machine licensed, so if you sell your machine and get a new one you have to buy a new copy of the OS, Strike 1. XP has a fairly stable core, but run more that about 6 programs in the background and try to switch it hangs or bogs, strick 2. Even a minor hardware issue seems to turn into the need to reactivate the home version... Strike 3....... Their out. I use it because I've not mastered the Samba server yet.. Once that's done and I get everything squared away, it's bye bye MS...
Wow, guess I've been sheltered. I've always gotten the releases that don't require activation, educational institute. But even the copy of XP x64 I'm running now (retail) exhibits none of these symptons, save the weekly reboots, which I really don't mind. Those are needed to clear the memory that XP won't release, which has always been a Windows issue from the beginning.
LOL, mines not Liscenced, XP Pro Corp., just slightly illegal actually. (I didn't just say that) I had a Duron 950 with 256 megs ram and I really miss that one. Now I'm running a Duron 1.3 and due to lack of funds I only have 96 megs of ram and a 10 gig HDD. W2K runs at twice the speed of Xp on this thing. As far as weekly rebooting, when I have been having problems with the computer randomly restarting it usually means that somwhere down the road its gonna put 120 volt through the board. Thats how I lost a Duron 850.
yea, with the pro versions, you dont have to liscences, witch is nice, because you can reinstall all you need. right now i got a 2.4 478 socket, with 768 megs of ram for now, a 80 gig and a 20 gig, with a cheapo nvidia ge force 2, and it does pretty good on xp, just nix systems do alot better on it.
I'm running XP Pro and have 512MB and a 60 gig hard drive, and I don't have any booting problems that people are talking about. This is all on this little laptop from hp that my grandma bought a few months ago. This computer has literally been on for about 3 and a half weeks now, and I'm constantly opening huge files, editing video and I do some graphic work on here too. She spends about 8 hours a day using it for her daily work which is on Citrix ICA.. I guess I just don't see the problems you guys have. I hear it's a resource hog.. I don't see it, I run at 112MB with 4 firefox windows, AIM, and photoshop 7.0 open. That sounds pretty good to me. I know we have some people that are into huge computers and stuff, and I guess XP just doesn't cut it for you guys.. all I gotta say, can you make one that's better? I don't mean based off something else, build an OS from scratch. Good luck.
