I'm a big fan of XP... I like it the way it is... I know a lot of people that are way more into computers and would like to see a better O/S.... but XP is so much better than all previous editions. I would expect this new system to be as much of an update as XP was over Windows 98SE
Don't know about how well the system will work, but they may already be in trouble with the name. See here . I always look to new MS products with some trepidation as you never know in what new way they are going to screw you.
Not only will I purchase it I have been running it off and on for almost a year! Microsoft (M$) Windows Vista (what a dumb name - Longhorn sounds so much better!) is not just a new desktop Op system, it is an entirely new architecture. Nt 3.x, NT4, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003 are all baed on the NT architecture Microsoft developed more than a decade ago. Vista will go beyond that, so not only is it the first new desktop OS in 5 years it's the first new architecture from M$ in over 10 years! I predict that it will be WELL recieved, although I think it will take a while. In fact I've literally got money riding on this thing from Intel and M$ stock purchases. I wouldn't do that if I wasn't SURE of how this will go. You know how many Windows 98 users are viewed now? "Why are you still running that old thing?" That will be Vista users in a few years talking to you XP users
Oh, and like ANY new OS there will be bugs and problems. I'd be suspicious if there weren't. If this bothers you just wait 6-12 months after it releases to buy it.
I totally agree with the wait 6 months to a year. I wait until they have all of the bugs found and eliminated and then upgrade. It is a lot easier and saves a lot of headaches and I am not that big of a techie that I need the latest and greatest as soon as it appears. I have an MP3 player, but not an Ipod as I care more for function than form.
Well, it's the first i've heard of it. I have some friends that are computer freaks. I guess news is just slow getting to TN. I just know basics, like hooking it up and surfing the internet. That's all i know or care to know about computers.
Looks cool, any faster processors comming out for laptops soon?
I'll be getting one when i go to collage and would like faster than the 3.3gig P4 "or what ever" is in our desktop
Another reason to wait is hardware driver availablity. For example, I run the 64bit version of Windows XP that released a few months ago. I STILL can't drivers for all my hardware, the vendors are always about 6 months behind. Longhorn (oops - Vista) will be no different.
DT 466Man - No, I don't think CPUs are going to get much faster for a while. Faster CPUs have heat issues to contend with. My system runs at just over 4.4GHz and I have to use liquid cooling to prevent it from overheating. I don't think liquid cooling will be a good laptop accessory Currently the GHz limit is 3.8GHz, unless you overclock (like me).
Rather than make CPUs faster (GHz, clock speed) the trend seems to be turing to executing more operations at the same time with the existing clock speed. The new Dual Core CPUs that are out do just that, they execute 2 instructions in real time simultaneously per clock cycle. If you can afford one that also has Hyperthreading, you are executing 4 instructions per clock cycle.
Win XP is the shizzle! I love it, I may not want to change my OS, I am finally content after 15 years of OS growing pains. I have been thru most of the microsoft programs, starting from win3.0/DOS6 and up to Win XP, 98 was a real nightmare too! I hope Vista is better, but I presently have no reason to change.
Don't worry. From what I've seen you will . And even if you don't WANT to M$ will do what they do best, end support for XP forcing you to move to Longhorn (I can't call it Vista!) within 24 months of release.
Right now for it's a toss up. I am either going to wait for Vista to come out or just switch over to Apple. I've been wanting an Apple for a long time, I like their systems a lot better then the IBM/Windows systems. It's just that they cost so much more then the IBM/Windows machines right now. They are supposed to be switching to Intel for their computer chips so hopefully the prices on them will come down and I will be able to afford one.
