My wife has a 2001 Expy EB with about 94K miles. Recently, when starting it up after it has been sitting for a while it will shut back off. Does this 2-3 times before it will stay running. After that it runs fine. BAck in May during a downpour I had it parked under the edge of the garage so all of the run off water came down on the hood. Later the same day when we tried starting it, it was hard to start and ran rough for a minute or so and then it was fine. Now occasionally it just shuts off after starting but will start right back up, but runs rough for a bit and then does fine. Any ideas? in April of this year the accelerator was sticking and had that fixed and it has been doing fine. No other problems with this vehicle. Any help to avoid the cost of going to Ford is appreciated.
Jake58 - I have the same problem right now with my 2000 5.4L. MattXXL had an "Expedition Owners Manual" in which Buzzard had detailed how to do it. Seems very easy - take the plastic cover off the throttle body, IAC is located in back of TB. Remove wiring connector and remove two bolts holding it in. Replace new part and gasket and you're done. I bought the part today and hope to have them on tonight. I'll let you know if it cures the problem.
Put in the new IAC valve tonight, only took 30 minutes. Here's the highlights:
- start with cold engine (trust me)
- remove plastic cover on top of throttle body, one bolt using 8mm socket on right and two using a 10mm on left.
- The IAC valve is on top all the way in the back of the engine bay next to the firewall. Disconnect the wire connector before you unbolt it (there's not much room and not enough slack in the harness to pull it forward).
- Use an 8mm socket to remove the two bolts holding it in.
- Hang new gasket on bolts and put it all back together.
Initial indications are that it is cured . The real test is tomorrow morning from a cold start.
It idled great this morning so it seems to be fixed. I had one dealer tell me $81 and another tell me $91. The second dealer told me the IAC is "calibrated to the vehicle" and wanted the last 8 digits of the VIN to look it up. The second dealer's part department has a reputation of being good and in case the calibration mattered I went with him.
I also replaced the one on my wife's Expy last night. Got it from Autozone for $42.00 total cost. Took me about 30 minutes to replace it. Did not have any problems this morning when she started it. Starting with a cold engine is definitely what you want to do. I did it when the engine was warm and I have evidence to prove it Thanks to all for the responses. Saved me some $ if I would have went to the dealer.

Calibrated to the Vehicle??????? Maybe you should start going to the cheaper dealer.
When I purchased my IAC a couple of years ago from the dealer, the parts salesman had to go out to my Expy and find some type of code that enabled him to provide me with the appropriate IAC. Apparently IAC's are available with more than one calibration.
Well, I am not quite sure I understand how an IAC can be calibrated to a VIN. Basically the IAC open’s to allow air to bypass the TB when at idle or VERY low throttle. The computer controls how much the IAC opens. This is based on engine speed by measuring the time between ignition pulses or from the TPS (not exactly sure how Ford makes the measurement, someone want to tell me?). Given that the computer is always learning how the motor is running, it would seem to me that only the computer can control the IAC. Maybe I am wrong in my thinking on this.
