My 99 PSD started running rough and the service engine light came on after changing the fuel filter. After shutting it down I restarted and it ran fine. Later it did the same thing. I replaced the filter again and it ran fine for about 10 miles. I shut it off and when I started it again the light came on and the rough idle and running was back. Any ideas on what the problem is.
Is it possible for you to pull the codes to see what was turning the SES light on? That would help the diagnosis a lot. If you can get that done, there's a good chance we'll be better equipped to help you.
I've heard of filters trapping air that takes awhile to purge. It would be like turning a glass upside down then pushing it into a sink of water. Air gets trapped at the top and only moves when disturbed.
We had alot of fluid filters at work that did this. Micro bubbles get trapped and are a pain.
I tried draning the filter bowl with the water drain valve and the engine will sometimes run good and no SES, but the next time I start it the problem returns. Is there another way to remove the air?
Not on a stock truck, there's no other way to get the air out than to just let it work it's way out. Don't drain the bowl again. That's just letting more air in. I'd give it overnight for the new filter to soak up the fueul and a day or so of driving to try and purge the air. But I don't think air in the fuel would cause the SES light to come on.
Do you have a Haynes or Chiltons book? Does your truck have a fuel pressure sensor?
If so and there is enough air getting in (from somewhere), the air will change the dynamics of the fluid pressure since air compresses differently then fluid.
This all based off the troubleshooting rule of "go back to the last thing that you touched".
