I have a 2001 V10 and I'm changing all the fluids and filters for a cross country trip this summer to pick up a truck camper. I have everything except the coolant. Prestone has just the 'new' universal coolant now that I don't want to take a chance with. I would like to get the Zerex G05 coolant, but can't find it anywhere. Is it available anywhere? What does everyone recommend for coolant? Would the factory coolant be best and which factory ford or motorcraft coolant is recommended and how much is it?
I'm currently running Propylene Glycol (Marine biodegradable), a popular Marine brand, in my V10. I can dump it in the yard and not face prosecution (well, sorta).
If it's Ethylene Glycol 50/50 mix, and you change it every 2 years, don't worry.
I have yet to see any obvious difference between brand-names, and no-name, as long as you change it regularly at the 2 year mark.
I don't see anything irregular about the '01 V10 cooling system, so basic all-around coolant is the way to go... my opinion...
Here is one of the times where I can safely say get what you like, or is least expensive, your choice. Just be sure to flush well and use the right mix. Unless you have a Ford PSD then you MUST follow the spec to a "T" and test, and add additives!
I have searched and searched for any coolant system trouble with the V10s back as far as they have been in service. I can only find two people who ever had a problem and it seemed like both them expected the stuff to lase forever! They both admitted that they factory coolant was in at over 175,000 miles! Crimeny Jehosephat! What on earth did they expect?
I am a Prestone fan, but admit I have used the MotorCraft stuff in both my personal V10s because my dealer price is only $0.50 more a gallon than the parts store coupon sales.
I've been doing some reading on the "new" prestone, and it is phoshate free and organic acid technology similar to the dex-cool. It seems no one knows for sure if it will be alright or not. I just do not want to be a guinea pig for these new coolants. You can't find the old or regular prestone anymore. I'm going to get the 'regular' peak coolant at Sams club to fill after the flush with distilled water. I got a few looks with 20 gallons of distilled water in the cart at Walmart yesterday.
It is always a good Idea to never mix types or brands unless you flush to the point that you are sure there is not enough residual mix to contaminate the new stuff.
Nothing about the iron block, aluminum heads, plastic and aluminum radiator and typical water pump is unique , exotic, or weird.
Like I said I find the Ford magic stuff for a fair price so I am not motivated to change types. But for folks who can get a quality coolant for 1 or 2 dollars cheaper then it makes sense to go with what the budget and momma insist on.
If you change the stuff out ever 18 to 24 months ( regardless of mileage) you can not hurt the system with todays typical coolants unless you don't flush, and screw up the mixture.
I know hard heads that insist on running 75-90% mix...ignorant and dumb and expensive. The stuff is designed to be diluted with H2O for a reason.
I know this is the V10 forum but someone mentioned additives if you have a PSD. What additives would you need to add for the PSD? Never heard of that. I did a coolant flush and refill on one of the ambulances about 2 months ago and just added 50/50. this was after the truck was run on straight water for almost a month.

There's a thing called "water wetter" or something like that, that makes the coolant suck up more heat from the metal. It also helps cavitation...
Don't know more than that.
Not that it's the same thing, but I flushed my mother-in-law's cooling system on a '95 Buick when it was only 4 years old. It had the "long life" coolant in it, so it should have still been good, right? WRONG! It was rusty, thick, and there was a lot of sludge in the system. Flushed that thing until it ran clear and put Propylene Glycol in it, 50/50, it's still in there, 5 years later (haven't had the time to do it again), and it's still GREEN. So much for "long life" coolant.
Not sure what Ford's using these days, but again, full flush, and use whatever you can find in the store, and mix 50/50 as the label says.
I don't know the spec off top of head anymore plus CRS is really strong this morning.
Plenty of threads on PSD cooling systems, testing, best test strips, additives, and comparisons of brands.
The Diesel motors can cause a few bad things to happen in automotive cooling systems. Weird PH levels, and other caustic problems. But mostly the additive Ford wants used to to prevent cavitation. The severel cavitation (all motors do it to some degree) in the PSD can errode interior coolent area passages and cause some serious grief.

there is a Ford-part numbered additive for the Navistars, and the PSD's have a shorter maintenance schedule from what I remember from mine. Bottom line is the additive is to help prevent cavitation erosion where the sound waves from the diesel clatter actually breaks small particles of the block off and pinholes form in your engine. It goes without saying that this could be bad for compression, and the PSD is compression fired. Ken
Yep, you know me, politically correct, NOT that there's anything wrong with anyone who may or may not be, politically correct regardless of race, creed, color, religious and/or sexual preferences, age, height, width, planet of origin nor anything else I could possibly think of that I could get sued for, amen pass the potatoes brother !
I kind of went through this same thing with the Toyota Red coolant. I couldn't find an aftermearket match so for a piece of mind I went ahead and bought it at the dealer. I know it costs more but it is not something that is replaced all the time.
Kinda the way I felt too... I bought a gallon of the gold stuff from the dealer, split it 50/50, and carry one of the gallons with me (I carry "everything else" too...) to top off the system should it ever need it. I don't want to mix green and gold, even in an emergency, when I'm out and about. I'll flush/fill the system later this fall, and plan to use the gold stuff then just because Ford specified it and it won't cost but a few dollars more.
