Oil Temp V Coolant Temp.

I just installed a edge insight. It is really cool. One of the screens that I have been running on it is the Oil Temp and Coolant temp.(two gauge bar) The Oil Temp is running about 10 degrees greater than the coolant temp while towing. I would have assumed the Coolant would have been the warmer one. Is my Oil cooler failing? While not towing they are a couple of degrees of each most of the time.

While towing the oil temp will be a little more. I noticed the exact same results. While driving around town, freeway etc not towing the coolant and oil temp will be about the same as each other. The last time my oil cooler/egr cooler busted (2 times now!) I noticed while the truck was warming up, the oil and coolant temps were the same. Since both coolers were replaced the oil temp will trail up to 30 degrees behind the water temp until normal operating temps are reached. Having both the oil and coolant gauges you can tell ahead of time when the oil cooler is failing. I have the oil temp sender on top of the oil filter cap and the coolant temp sender on the driver's side of the block. It would be interesting to see your results going through the ODBII connector and using the stock senders. If you wouldn't mind watch the two temps while your truck is warming up in the mornings and see if you get the difference in temps between the two.

I also have the Insight and my oil temp is always 3 to 4 degrees hotter than the coolant once the engine is warm. I haven't towed since i got the Insight so don't know how towing effects the oil temp.

I had the lasted PCM update (TSB 09-24-03) installed on Nov 25th, after the install the tech and i went for a ride with the tech's computer hooked up, oil temp ran about 6 degrees warmer than water temp, tech said that the temps were normal with no load. Oil will normaly run warmer than coolant, this has been my experience. Hope this helps, read my post in the 6.0 section about " new flash for 6.0" a couple of days ago, chezzit lists all the new functions update does. I trucked for 25 years for myself and under load oil temp would climb, ( I had all Catarpiller powered Peterbilt's) depending on ambiant temps. Let us know what you find, good luck!

oil/coolant temp

Oil temp will always be a little warmer than coolant in a warmed up engine. One of oil's main jobs is cooling. In the 6.0 if the oil temp gets more than 25 degrees warmer than coolant - the oil cooler is plugging up and needs to be replaced, and continued driving like that will result in a cooked EGR cooler as it is fed coolant from the oil cooler. In my truck the oil temp lags coolant temp until a point where the oil temp is higher than coolant temp. That's the point where I feel the engine is completely warmed up. You can set your insight to warn you when the temps go above a setting you choose, its a great unit, I hooked an EGT up to it also, which is a must in my view for towing. I use a 1250 degree limit, and have had to back off a couple times when towing in the mountains on a hot summer day, not much, just a few mph's, but you would be surprised how hot the egt's can get if you want to tow uphill fast on a hot day.

Thanks to all!

I have set my warning at 1000, 1150, and 1300. Don't know why, just sounded like good numbers.

That is the screen that I leave it at most of the time. EGT and Boost.

The temperature difference that Ford states is a problem is above 15 degrees, not 25 degrees.

So if I see a 15 degree diff I need to replace the cooler or can it be cleaned/saved? Not there yet, but I did go to 10.

Any over 15 degrees the oil cooler needs replacement as the fins and internals of the oil cooler start to be restricted. Many of these concerns in my field come from a lack of maintance to the cooling system or mixing coolants big no no!!!!!! What also happens from the lack of coolant flowing through the oil cooler that same lack passes to the egr cooler. With less coolant to lower exhaust gas temp the egr cooler breaks internally causing white smoke out the exhaust and loss of coolant all the time. In this case the egr and oil cooler need to be replaced. Lil do some people know the root cause is from the oil cooler cause the egr cooler to fail. If only eot is 15 degrees over ect replace oil cooler, oil change, and coolant flush. Should be good to go after that

The oil cooler "core" MUST be replaced if you see a 15 degree temp diff. It is not cleanable.

Thanks Guys!
I have a sneeky pipe and a plug in the EGR hole. sounds like this will be a good time to just remove the EGR cooler. New Oil Cooler, remove EGR cooler........... in 5 more degrees.

When I am running around town my oil and water temps run about the same. When I tow my fifth-wheel (12,500 lbs) the oil temp will run about 5-10 degrees hotter but when pulling a hard climb it has run 25 degrees hotter at times. By hard climb I mean 7 percent grade or better. Granted this is only for a short time but it bothers me. The problem is my oil cooler was changed last year. When I mention these figures to my dealer he told me they could test drive it but we have no real climbs is my area that will make it go this high for the dealer. I will just live with it for now.

I'm usually in the neighborhood of 3-4 degrees higher on EOT, but even driving without towng I'm seeing 10-11 degress at times....hopefully I'm not looking at a oil cooler going down. I plan to delete the egr and when I do, probably replace the oil cooler while I'm at it.
