For the '05 this sounds like the 'TEST' mode. Here are the instructions:
Push and hold the Setup and Reset buttons simultaneously and turn the key to the on position. When "Test" appears in the odometer, release the Setup and Reset buttons and you are in the DTC mode. Press reset to cycle through the data fields.
You can start and drive in this mode. The Left button (I think) cycles through about 50 display. It is fun to watch.
The next time the truck is started, the display returns to normal.

Not that this is related or anything, but my '96 t-bird climate-control would go whacky, reporting outside temp of -40 degrees, and going to full HEAT.
It would do this once a year or even less often.
Guess why? I did some research after hearing the news one day, reporting high sun-spot activity.
Turns out, each time my climate control went weird, there was a sun-spot advisory. Interesting, eh? My '97 Cougar with the same system never hiccups at all.
Sometimes a reboot is all that's needed...
