Replacing Lifters

Could someone please tell me what is involved in replacing my worn lifters and if any special tools are required? I am not an expert mechanic but would like to do the job myself.

Thanks,

Simon

It's not hard on that engine at all. Pull the valve cover, and the side cover. You can pull the side cover without pulling the distributor if you take your time. The lifters are right there behind the side cover. Loosen the rocker arm nuts until you can pop the arms off the pushrods, then pull the pushrods (keep them in order), then pull the lifters. Depending on how many miles are on the engine, or the kind of maintenance it recieved, some may be a bit stubborn. I usually use a short prybar I got a Home Depot called the wonderbar, it works great for stuff like this. Drop the new lifters in with break-in lube if that's recommended, or just with molycote on the bottom, and reassemble. You will need to adjust the valves with the engine running, though. At idle, there should be a minimal amount of oil up there, so it won't make much of a mess. I usually adjust mine by ear, back it off till you hear a little clicking, then tighten down about half a turn.

Thanks, I have a couple more questions...what is "molycote"? can I just replace the bad lifter or might I as well replace them all? and, I believe it is necessary to break in the new lifter(s), is that correct?

Thanks for your help!

How do you know if you need to replace lifters/pushrods/valves/valve springs? I think this would all be real easy stuff to do but why would you do it? How do you know if they're worn?

He's probably hearing a tick, tick, tick sound which is often a sign of a bad lifter. It's usually more pronounced at startup and disappears as the lifter pumps itself up with engine oil.

I've been hearing a tick, tick, tick sound intermittently lately. Would you just replace all of them? Are lifters one of them things that you say well, since I've got a jillion miles on this engine I'll just replace them all.

When you get into it make sure you look at the cam lobes, if worn you won't be getting much value on your new lifters!

Yes, I have the ticking; though it is intermittent and can be quietened by using synthetic oil mixed about 50/50 in the crankcase. I just think it is time to tackle the problem once and for all. I hope that is the extent of the damage. Thanks for the advice.
