Dont let them charge you. I have a 2004 6.0 that has been puking coolant for about 25000 miles. dealer replaced cap, or didnt do anything until they finallr replaced head gaskets. My truck has been leaking oil from somewhere since 7000 miles. After 15 trips to the dealer in the 14 months ive owned the vehicle, It hasnt leaked in two weeks.(But IT Will AGAIN) The only thing I have done to the truck is a line-x, seat covers, running boards, and a 5th wheel hitch. I have probably been asked 10 times about the chips. All I can say is that I'm glad i never put one in. In a nutshell, no mods and still puking coolant.
Mine has been back from the shop for less than a week from getting a new head and new head gaskets. I'm waiting for the coolant level to stabilize, but it's already run a small amount out of the bottle (level below the minimum but still in the bottle). Kinda hacks me off but I'll hook the camper up today and give it a good pull just to see if I can make it puke. I think I'll start calling this truck "Ralph".
Someone is going to have to get a handle on this before they scrap making they scrap the 6.0 which is only another year. People don`t get me wrong I love my truck but the coolant problem keeps showing up. I have had the EGR cooler replaced the head gaskets and the heads and it still pukes when towing. 16,000 lbs. I took back to the shop they took the hood off hooked a pressure guage up to the coolant bottle and a pressure guage to the fuel system and they hooked there computer up to it we took loaded with about 15,500 lbs. We went about 5 miles and coolant temp spiked the the coolant pressure came up to over 20lbs at that time the EGR cooler had opened up. Still moving the truck starts to go into derate mode cutting back on power. The diesel tech says it is because of the oil temp 280 dg not the coolant temp 218 dg. I am going to pus some numbers together to try and see if I can figure out what is going on. I first thought it was the EGR cooler but with an oil temp like thet I am having second thoughts. EGT X coolant temp X oil temp dosen`t make for a cool running diesel.
I had a thought this morning--maybe someone can put some comparison's up here. I was wondering if those people that have the worst problems with coolant puking are also those getting decent fuel mileage. On the highway I get between 18 and 21 and also have the worst problems puking antifreeze. The worst was when mama towed her camper home, got 14mpg and blew almost 3 gallons of coolant. I wonder if there's any correlation between fuel mileage and coolant puking???
