My chip failed on my 97 F-250 Powerstroke and now I am torn between getting another chip or tuner. It sounds like getting a tuner is the way to go now days, but I am a little leary about reprogramming the original computer codes. Has anyone heard of any problems with the tuner failing to put the original codes back in the truck? Also, if you take the truck back to the dealer, do you have to put the original code back in?
If you're truck is a '97, I'd be surprised if you have any warranty left, so removing the program shouldn't be necessary, unless you're trying to diagnose a poor running condition.
The pro's and con's of chips and tuners have been batted back and forth for a long time. Some prefer the way a tuner will let you "customize" the tuning. Personally, I like having a toggle switch that allows me to change from one program to another on the fly. Both are good, I think it's a matter of preference.
