I'm thinking about pulling my dash out. I'll clean it, paint it, and replace the dash pad... or at least cover it...
Are there any tricks to this? For instance, how do I get the **** off of the headlight switch? And how long does this take? I've seen some dashes that can take all day, and some that come right apart. This is my first ford...
Not a real big job. Take out the instrustrument cluster, radio and heater controls and remove the glove box (black part). You have to remove the steering column trim piece. Just keep unbolting things. There is a row of screws across the top of the dash and a bolt on the inside of each end of the dash. While you're at it, repaint your steering column. It is also a perfect oppertunity to repair any damage to the wiring behind the dash. It is a nice feeling to know everything is repaired and neat behind the dash after it's all back together. Just take your time as some of the parts are very old plastic and brittle and therefore will not take much abuse.
Yeah. Having just bought the truck I'm a little frusturated with the negligence of the previous owner. I'm sure there'll be a wiring nightmare back there, but you never know... maybe it'll all be fine.
I thought those screws and bolts were all that held it in, but I figured, "no way it's that easy..." I'm really starting to like owning a ford. Just try to take the metal part out of a 79 chevy dash without a grinder...
