i hope i am posting this in the right forum, but even if not, im sure you guys can help me out. i need to install new gears for my set-up and am debating on which to pruchase. i have a f150 2wd auto. i put on a 6" superlift suspension, 3" body and 35x12.5 mud terrains. it will only see minor off road (mainly mud) and is a daily driver to work and to and from school at Texas A&M 3hrs away (i make that drive about 5-8 times a year). for my set-up and needs from the truck, which do you see as the better ratio? thank you so much for your help, as i need this info as soon as possible!
If it were me, I'd go with the 4.56's.
I have a F150 with 4 and 3body, 35's I changed to 4.10 and now wish I had done 4.56's.
5th gear is useless on any hill.
My two cents.

Definately go with the 4.56 gears. That ratio will put you slightly better than stock and it will compensate for the slight increase in rolling resistance due to tire width and weight.

With OPEC and our own wonderful gasoline producers doing it to us again, you may want to rethink regearing lower and stay with the higher ratio now in place.
I just took a crosscountry road trip, Texas to Michigan, and back, and the per gallon price jumped a bad-enough $1.46 or so to over $2.00.
I am going to wait until Fall to make any major decisions, but I am beginning to wonder about my own 4.10s...

so Eddie you are saying that i should stay with the stock 3.55 and 35x12.5? i thought changing to 4.56 with those tires would help my MPG. am i badly mistaken here? please help me to understand this, i really don't want to mess up!
What is your existing rear axle ratio? You can find the code for it on the mylar certification decal on the driver's side door jamb. It will be an alphanumeric code of some sort. Post it, and I can figure out your overall gear ratio.
The factories in recent years have been doing anything they can to boost fuel economy, and the easiest way is to drop engine RPMs, i.e., the switch to overdrive transmissions.
Larger tires decrese the final drive ratio, same as OD gears.
However, too much OD is not a good thing either.

Yes definetly go w/ the 4:56 gears. As I myself have a 1994 x-cab 4x4 302 auto w/ 4" susp. and 33/12.50/15 Mud Kings and 3:55 gears now. If I go into OD it really luggs her bad so I just run in drive and it raps about 2400 RPM's @ 65 MPH. I too want 4:56 gears and was hopeing that it would let me run at that RPM in OD as it does better on fuel; milage than it did before I lift and rapped 1700 @ 65. I constitute this to the fact that it luggs the motor and a 302"s RPM curve is up there around 3000RPM"s and if you can keep your R"s up it will do better on gas.. Sorry or the longf post I just got to rambling
If you can find someone that has a similar setup to the one that you plan on changing too, take a test drive because once take this step it will take a big chunk of change to get back. I have a I6 4x4 lifted F150 with 33x10.5's and 4.10s. I find that this ratio is a little high for highway driving. And when I say high this is my seat of the pants impression. This is what makes it difficult to figure this out by asking people because everyone will have an opinion. For me I am almost considering 35's to reclaim some lower rpm's but I really like the 33's size and overall on/off road performance. If it is highway driving and not a lot of 'wheelin that you do I would probably lean towards the 4.10's(but that is just me)
Eddie my axle has a code of H9. its a 8.8 rear with 3.55 gears and the limited slip option. (3L55 on the diff. tag). Let me know if you need anything else.
can anyone tell me the ballpark MPG i'll get at 70mph with each gear ratio, 4.10 and 4.56(with the 35mud set-up)? maybe this answer will clear up which way to go bec i do not yet have an RPM gague to see how fast my engine is currently turning. Thanks so much for all of your help!
hey Eddie...i was just checking to see if you had figured out that ratio yet. i hope i gave you the code you were needing to figure this out! thanks again for all the help!!!!
Definatley go with the 4:56's. 4:10's would work great with 33's, but for anything bigger, go 4:56. If your ever planning on bigger than 35's, you may even look into 4:88's.
