Looking to install a navigation system in my SD. Just wanted to get some opinions on the best systems available been looking at garmins and magellan what do you guys think? Got any picks of your set-up?
I have been using Garmin since 1996. Started with a gps12, then gps V, now I have a 276c. I use it for service calls every day. When I,m finished at one house I just type in the next address and drive. It tells me when to turn, how far to destination etc. Its potable and sits on my dash on a sticky type pad. I have it wired into the truck with 12v and a speaker under the dash. When I go out in the boat I can take it with me for navigating water ways. I had to fly to California and rent a car, took this with me and never got lost. I never even got a road map for that trip, just the gps. One of the best investments I made.
I have a garmin handheld, but in my truck I have a Pioneer AVIC-N1 which is a great unit. It is touch screen and east to use. Pictures in my gallery on interior pictures.
I have a Garmis 2610. Its touchscreen with voice, easy. And like the other guy you can take it to another car or boat or ? I have In Dash dvd system but you need to watch out. Some, all in one navigation, Dvd, etc. will pause the show when you have a turn coming up. I like the seperate unit. Ya I know, not suppose to have the dvd going when driving.
I have a 50 cent paper map from Mobil in 1972.
Nah, got a Magellan Colortrak. Very portable, handheld. Waterproof and floats but not easy to use in the vehicle. Difficult to enter or read data when on the roll. Will be getting an in-dash unit.
I have used both Garmin and Magellan in vehicles. Both work very well, you just need to pick what serves your interests best in the price range you set. You don't need all the bells and whistles. Some people like the talking units, I don't. Some like above dash, others prefer in-dash. So many options to choose from, choose what you want/need.
I don't know about you but at my age the bigger the better. I use my laptop with DeLorme Street Atlas 2005. It has all the bells and whistles and for less than a $100 bucks.
Ok, since the can of worms is open on software.....
Yes, the DeLorme is nice. You can get it with a stick-on GPS head for about $120.00. Plus you can have a fully functional laptop. I'm getting one of those pedestals like the PD has in their cars and a T-Mobile wireless card for internet access in the truck.
Didn't realize we had so many avic-n1 users here. I too have one in my truck and absolutely love it. It's quite accurate too. I ran the antenna (along with the xm antenna) out the 3rd brake light so there's nothing to block it.
Running out the third brake light, great, I didn't think of that one....
I wan considering the one inch port behind the rear seat. It's a black plug, looks like it was designed to be a wire pass-through.
If ya go the route of the third brake light, you may as well replace it with a better light. I can't find the link at the moment, probably on my computer at work.
Just purchased the Garmin C330 and am very happy! Pros are it is small!! Very easy to use and accurate a lot of easy features!! I highly reccomend this unit for anyone looking for a navigation unit that is simple to use. Flows well with any interior and highly accurate nothing but praise from me on this unit!! I spent a lot of time looking around at diffrent units.. Garmin got this one right.. Pricey but well thought out for the common user!!
