you also get free sirius for a year or whatever, but I think it is like 15 bucks or something a month after that? don't know, it is coming up on time for that for mine, I do not know if I am going to buy it...can't say I use it all that often....
dont go on loing trips much any more, and I have an ippod that works well...
Not sure what you mean, but I think you're talking about map updates. They are $200 from Navteq.
That is cheap too. Y'all might not think so, but compared to other map updates out there, that is the cheapest that I've seen for factory installed navigation(and even some of the aftermarket ones as well). That's not for the Garmin and equilivant ones mind you, that's for the headunit navigation systems.

We got 6 mos in Canada on Sirius....I just started paying about $15 CDN plus tax....you can commit longer and save a few $$ but at this point I didn't want to commit. Living in the Toronto area you get plenty decent radio choices already....
It's not just navigation, it's a DVD player, has 10gig hard drive, includes the Sony speakers/subwoofer (normally ~$500 as a separate option), all touchscreen control, controls HVAC settings, Sirius radio plus travelink w/weather radar maps, etc., and more.
plus the way it looks/blends into the dash and also shows a nice big reverse camera image...both priceless!
so for the $2k, you're not just getting a simple "navigation" system....I don't know much about at all Garmin or other GPS units out there, but my factory system has taken me everywhere I wanted to go on out of town trips without any issues at all.
$2K for a sub par navigation system is just ludicrous. A $200 portable Garmin will smoke the OEM navigation.
That's actually going to depend on where you travel and where you will use it the most.
The significant other has a Nuvi and that doesn't do a whole lot of good around here or where we travel the most. The GPS in my 150 does a whole lot better job and has more features then the Nuvi as well. In my DRW I have a Pioneer Avic Z2 and the OEM Ford blows it out of the water, but that Z2 is an older model as well, so I would hope that things have improved.
I think some are still stuck on that OEM is crap from the get go. Doesn't matter if we are talking radio electronics(which I was one of these for hte longest time) or stock air filters.

Well some maybe, but OEM is typically crap and far behind technology/quality wise of the aftermarket. Most of the internals are antiquated compared to current aftermarket offerings.
I have also used the Pioneer units and was not impressed. Not sure what Nuvi you had, but if it is a recent model with updated maps, don't see why it wouldn't be better than OEM.

Actually when I first got it it, I was really impressed. Graphics wise as what as the optional extras you could get for it. At the time though, all those options were seperate and needed seperate adapters, but that was the case for all of the "higher" end ones as well.

I can't remember the exact model number, she has it with her now. I do know we updated the maps this summer. I don't know how old those "latest" ones were, might have had a newer update since this summer, that I can't tell you.
I can tell you that I know that all of the GPS companies(not the map making companies mind you, those are only two(to my knowledge) for the digital format anyway, NavTech and one other that I can't remember) select and choose what they have available. That keeps people doing the updates. I know that roads that have had medians now that didn't, the OEM reflects that change, while the nuvi does not. It's little things like that.
I had a alpine in dash installed in my f250, and it worked pretty flawlessly. but however i used a OEM in my buddies truck and it worked faster and it also looked alot better in the dash. just my personal opinion.
