Guys, I've been chasing an annoying squeak in the steering column on my '76 F-250. I've read here before that some squeaks originate just under the steering wheel. I pulled it and lubed the contact point. (My horn is a button on the dash, so no need for the contact ring.) Then I applied military grade CLP, (Cleaner Lubricant Preservative) around the opening where the shaft emerges. I worked the column left and right many times, lubing as I went along. Even after all of that I still have a fingernails on the blackboard squeak. Any ideas? All help appreciated! Mitch
I don't know if the 76 is the same but in the 78 there is a small ball bearing and snap ring under the turn signal switch assy. that supports the steering shaft. Maybe the bearing is dry or failed. The bearing in mine is only open to the bottom side and thus spray lube from the top would not reach it. Mine is also an automatic if that matters.
Just my 2c
I appreciate both feedbacks. I'll be looking for the snap ring and bearing, and if that doesn't fix the problem, I'll replace the $%@$@#$ steering column.
