Need to machine a small engine crankshaft

Hi, I'm working on 2 generators. One has a blown engine( no oil, broken con rod, killed cyl/ crank) The other has a blown gen head. I'm trying to put the good engine on the good gen head, but the good engine has a differnt shaft. it has a solid about 1 inch shaft with large threads at the end. the required shaft has a taper on it. Can I bring a crankshaft to a machineist and have a taper machined on, or would I be better off trying to get a new crank. How much would I expect to pay for a shaft turning? All thats required is to put the correct taper in, drill one hole and put threads in it. I could even thread the hole myself.

OR i was thinking I could do some redneck engineering and run the engine and hole some sandpaper untill it got the right taper! haha!

Take it to a machineist. But I wouldn't try the redneck way. lol. Or you could by a new one. What kind of generator?

I take it they don't use pulleys to connect the gen and engine...

The blown engine gen was a Coleman, the Good engine was a Kohler. Both engines are briggs. both around 5000 watts

Iv seen the cranks go for around 50 bucks. , and I think a machinest would be cheaper.. I'll make some calls tomorrow.

They are bolted directly to the engine, no belts.

Pity.

Pelts and pulleys would have been less expensive.

What are the rated HP on the engines? If they are 8hp or above the straight shaft is usually 1", the tapered saft is usually 30mm (the straight shaft might be too small). If you can pick up a crank for $50 you might be better off that way. Most shops around here would cahrge WAY more than that to turn it down.

Getting a taper turned on a crank and having a hole drilled and tapped in the end will be a bit more than $50. Don't they have couplers between the engine and generator? Lots of times you can get different coupler halves to work together.

I pulled the crank out of the engine, the shaft is aboue 1/2 inch too short. I'm gonna look into having a adapter made that would slide over the old shaft and then have the correct length taper.

Both are 8's

Sounds like a good idea.

You could just buy a new generator...

Haha, thats cool. People always throw away small 1 cyl engines. I see so many when I go drop stuff off at the dump.
