So I got my hands on a coleman 5000W generator with a 10HP (Model #HM100) Tecumseh recentley, the only problem is that some dork shoved the wrong plug in the engine, and buggered up the threads in the head.
My question is do I have to buy a whole new engine or can I fix this one? If I do have to buy a new engine can I get one with an electric starter already attached, or will it not bolt up to alternator properly?
I have had mixed results repairing threads in an aluminum (small engine) head.
Using the engine model number and the engine serial number, go to your local small engine repair/parts facility and get another cylinder head and gasket.
Relatively cheap fix. Just watch those head bolt torque specifications. You don't want to strip the threads out of the block.
when it comes to a generater that may have to supply electricity for you and your family in an emergency i would put a new head on it and not to cheap out
Thanks for the replies guys, I'm finally going to get time to bring the thing to my place this weekend.
I just remebered that I'm gonna have to pull the head no matter what, since I should check the piston to make sure it's not buggered from smashing the plug. If the pistons gone, then I'll replace the head and piston. And maybe put a electric starter kit on it while it's all taken apart.

On a HM-100 the spark plug is centered over part of the cylinder and the piston should not have hit it,it is common for people to put to long of a plug in the 8 and 10hp motors and strip the head.
Head part number 36449, gasket 36451. Both can be purchased online for less than $40 plus shipping.
Good luck with the starter idea. Tecumeh only made available a 120V starter intended for HM series that were used on snow blowers. Depending on the series of HM100 on your Coleman, you may find that there are no mounting bosses on the block or that the flywheel does not have a ring gear.
Perhaps you'll get lucky. You'll have to take a closer look at yours when you get it in hand. If you have the bosses and the ring gear, you may find a 12V starter available that will work.
We'll I got the head pulled today with no major problems. The spark plug threads are totally gone though. The local small engine shop wants like $80 for the head and gasket. Since my dads buddy owns a machine shop I'm gonna take it there and see what they'll charge me.
Or possibly order the head out of the states, hopefully shipping wont be an arm and a leg though.
