Try looking for a cheap book called "Practical Engine Swapping," the thing has some really nice info. I suggest measuring the width wise in the engine bay and see is the engine you have would fit. I think it's easier to fit an engine in there legnth wise than width wise. I thought about a 5.0 in a second gen (the first are hideous) but I never really got any further than dreaming. I think I measured the compartment to have enough room for a 5.0 between the towers, but I didn't take a look at the suspention.
The book explains the process in detail. It's best to have the entire car stripped of the interior and engine to begin with.
ya its a second generation rx7, ive gutted under the hood and in the process of removing the ECU and all of its components and wiring. so you have a rx7 also? i blew a apex seal on the rotor and they wanted 3000 dallors to rebuild it, so im going to put another engine in myself (or try to)!
rx8 engine is the same engine i had in there 13b injection. i want to covert over to piston driven engine because there much more practical, less maintenence, and i like the sound. i was thinking of a carburated 289 or boss 302 what you guys think, im going to kelowna pick your part today to see if i can scoop an engine to rebuild
If you really want to throws some people for a loop. Try and get a turbo 4cyl for it. Those thunderbirdsuper coopes moved pretty well, that the rx7 probably weighs about 1000lb less. Last year hotrod mag ran about 5 stories dealing with these little wonders. Great power to weight and miliage out the wazzo.
No, I have a 280zx, but have been very close to buying two different 2nd gens, they just dissapear right when I get the cash. I think the 2nd gens are way cool looking and would take one over my 280 in a heartbeat.
A V6 is a good idea for that car, but I'd go for a carburated engine for simplicity, although fuel injection can be fitted for some extra time and cash. And if you don't really care about having a stick or not, an auto is usually easier to install, but it may not be for this case. A Mustang T-5 may fit perfectly in there, and I'm betting that it has a hydralic clutch so that simplifies instalation even more.
If you do go with a 302 I think that it would be a good idea to add some stregnth to the "frame". The power of a 302 could cause some serious stress and may distort the "frame". And I don't know if the indi rear will be capable of handling the torque also. So you may see if you can get that stregthened too and lay off the hammer a bit more.
The job can be tough, but if you know what you're doing it's a much easier task.

ya i heard that the rx7 frame was rather strong and i wouldnt have to support it in any way and the rear end should be fine but it wont handle well over 100mph but i also think it would be hard to find a boss 302
