I currently have DSL internet. I want to switch to a new DSL modem (same make and model, just new). If I just unhook the old modem and plug in the new one will my internet still work or do I need to call the provider and have them change something.
You should stop by the providers office and give them the needed info on the way back from purchasing it, if they are on the way. They need the number on the back and the mac address. And if the old one belongs to them as part of a rental, they need it back and you don't want to be paying for it. It may take 24 hours for the change.,
still requires the sn and the mac address, to be put into the phone companies system. Mac address gives the dhcp server the info to locate and give it, it's id.

I think you're confused with a Cable Modem But yes to the rental/lease portion, if your provider charges you for rental/lease of the modem, you should send it back My provider doesn't, so I have quite an inventory of DSL Modems. I'm currently using one that was used here at my work for our business DSL line (3mbit), it hold's line sync better than any other DSL modem I've tried at home (I have connection troubles due to my distance from the provider).
Thanks for all the help so far. I really appreciate the replies. The reason I am asking is I want to get internet in my shop which has the same phone number. If I take my current modem and hook it up too my shop computer I can get online (I tried and it worked). I am wondering if I can buy a new modem and have access both in my house and in the shop. I dont necessarily need to be online at both places at the same time. I have been told that this won't work But I would like to know why.
I have tried a wireless network and the signal didn't reach (its about 600 feet away).
I use Bell Sympatico here. Bell is (obviously) the large DSL provider here in Canada by far. Third-party DSL providers use Bell's DSL infrastructure, so the same would apply to them. Bell Sympatico doesn't require the MAC address of the DSL, you can connect any DSL modem to your phone line, as long as you do so one at a time.
So, for what you want to do, it would be possible here in Canada (as long as you disconnected the phone cord between the line and the DSL modem when you connected the other one up)
You could also look at using a Cable/DSL Router and run a network cable out to your garage/shop. No worries about Wireless security or anything, just solid wired networking
I have a DSL modem connected to a Linksys Cable/DSL Router, and have wires running to almost every room Having Internet in the garage makes things so much easier/handy!
