I have never taken the engine out of any vehicle. I have a 1987 Plymouth Voyager that has been sitting in my garage with an over heated engine for almost 3 years. I got a break the other day. I found an 87 Voyager with the same engine. I was looking through the Haynes repair manual to see how to remove the engine. The procedure was titled "Engine Removal and Installation". I read through the steps and It seems Like something I can do. Except, at the end when it's almost time to take the engine out it says "remove drivaxles" then, "remove engine/tranaxle assembly from the vehicle". I do NOT want to take the entire tranaxle out. Isn't it as simple as disconecting the engine from the transmission?
Well, now that we're on the topic. The van I'm getting the engine out of has electric door locks. My van does not. Would it be easy to take the electric ones out of the other van and put them in mine?
I can't believe you're going to make him pull the complete assy. out of this thing. I know the book says that's the way to do it but,I have done this several time. You CAN pull just the motor on these if thats all you want to pull. Why go through all the extra work? Just un-bolt the torque convertor and the bell housing, just like a correct wheel drive vehicle. Just make sure you support the trans.
I dunno about an 87, but on another one we did, we had to take the engine out through the bottom, which meant EVERYTHING under there had to be removed..
