It is an 86 engine 300, that is all we are sure of on this end. Did the entire EECIII ECA, harness, and distributor stay with the 86 engine or are you mix and matching?
Post the history of your build up.

Also, what is the symptom on the three blown coils, any opens circuits?

Just looking at the Haynes manual...Duraspark II and III systems both use a ballast resistor between the ignition module and battery side of the coil, and there is a few good pages of troubleshooting tips for both in the Haynes manual.

Ok thanks yes it is a duraspark two system that came with it in 1986.All I did was hook up the wiring harness the way the instructions said with the coil wire to the coil and dist.wire to the other side.All the original duraspark wiring was used. TKS

Haynes manual specs on Duraspark II;
Coil primary resistance:0.8 to 1.6 ohms
Coil secondary resistance:7700 to 10900 ohms
ballast resistor: 0.8 to 1.6 ohms
coil voltage from dizzy base(ground) to BAT terminal: 6 to 8 voltsDC

The older trucks did not have the resistor and DS II did and I have a truck with DS III OEM and if has the resistor and I have seen many DS III with out them! So use an aftermarket soil rof use without a resistor or install one the line!

Just to set the record straight, labsownus is correct that the older trucks did not have a *resistor* -- but the did have a resistor *wire* which functioned in the same manner. The bit of wire (historically pink and a little "thicker" than usual) from the ignition switch to the firewall, was actually a resistor. You need to bypass it for use with newer coils that are designed for 12v.

if you use a standard tube looking coil you need the resistor if you use the TFI open frame coil you do not need the resistor. Which is what I did on my 1984 it had TFI on it And I went back to duraspark II and used the TFI coil works perfect truck runs better that ever.

TKS guys for the replys I put another accel tube type coil on for a duraspark electronic ignition and checked for voltage when running and I had 11.76v. on the + side and 5.86 on the dist side.with the on (truck not running) for about 5 minutes the coil again got real hot.Almost to the degree of not being able to touch it for more then a few seconds.SORRY about the delay of getting back to you all but being a truck driver I am gone for 5-6 days at a time.TKS again for all your help.Hope one of you also had this problem and knows of a fix.
