key switch question

I have a 65 f100 with a 5.0 msd distributor and coil. It's not getting the correct amount of volts to the coil to start the motor. When i hook the coil up to the battery it starts fine what is my problem, my key switch not putting out 12 volts? how do i fix this with out changing the switch? thanks

There's a pink resistor wire coming out of the ignition switch that drops the voltage to the distributor to 8-9 volts. Bypass it and you'll get a full 12 volts to the distributor. The wire was needed in the days of points to prevent them from burning up prematurely. If I remember correctly, the MSD distributor requires a full 12 volts.

I have a one wire HEI distributer to install. Im guessing that I will need a full 12v also.
