Problems areas?

I am looking into purchasing either an 87 or 88 F150, both have the 300I6. Is there anything to look out for or avoid with these trucks? Both have 4 speed manuals, one 2WD, one 4WD. Not sure of miles. Was told by a buddy that they run good and look Fair to OK. This buddy will purchase whichever one I don't want, so I think he's telling the truth. We're paying $400 for the pair, so I figure even if they have to be completely rebuilt, we have good starting points. We are both used to diesels, so when it comes to something with spark plugs, we are lost. Thanks in advance.

I have a 1988 300-6 efi motor it runs great other than i ****ed up my wiring but yah... As for 400$ if it runs and has wheels ****t thats definetly worth it. People would die to have my motor here in ohio for 500$. As for the power i think its like 160 hp and 265 ft lbs torque. 300-6 is about as close as gas engines get to a diesel. The power bands are vary low and, Run outa power at about 3500 rpms just like most diesels. A 4 speed sounds good to me if it's same as i have im 16 and constantly abuse mine and it does great. As for a fast engine in my opinion they are not but, good for work and anything that runs is worth 400$ in my opinion. anyways good luck and 300-6s are also arguably 1 of the longest lasting gas engines built and, shouldnt have a big trouble getting 300,000 miles out of 1 if maintained properly and driven reasonably. anywayz i'd sure as hell buy it if i were you good luck once you get it.
