I've had this happen a few times. It's weird. Odd feeling. I usually try to go back to sleep and hope I was dreaming.

I've had this a few times, usually after some really extreme dream (not the good kind, either!). It feels like I know I"m dreaming so I try to wake myself and I can see everything in the room but I can't move or wake up. After what feels like a really long time I'll finally be able to wake up and I'm out of breath and heart pounding. I used to sleepwalk when I was a kid, so maybe I'm just screwed up!?

I get that once in a while, esp. if I'm overtired. I usually panic and jerk awake after a struggle.

It's caused by one of two things. The brain has a mechanism that paralyses the body while you sleep so that you don't act out your dreams. The other possibility is lucid dreaming, where you are dreaming but partially conscious and able to control your dream and hear things around you. I once incorporated a ringing phone into my dream but had no power to wake and answer it.

LOL, I can tell you the first time it happens it is not fun... After that that, you can think of it like "Coooool" or you can panic!

I've always been crazy -- keeps me from going insane.

And yes, it happen to me too. Twice. I agree, the first time it happens you really think you may have died. I could open my eyes but not move my eyes and I could hear. After the panic passed I thought -- Ok I'll just go back to sleep and wake up again the RIGHT way.

I was very tired at the time. I was building my house during the day and then working the 4-12 shift at nite. I was an instrument tech at the time and we only had to answer trouble calls at night. We had this home-made hammoc(sp) that was too cozy. It was like being back in the womb. After the second time it happened I decided it was better to sleep in a chair.
